DIY Dino Discovery Bath Bombs Kids Will Dig

Does your child love dinosaurs? These DIY dino discovery bath bombs were inspired by Dino Dana and sponsored by Amazon. They're fun for moms to make and kids to bathe with!

My 7-year old daughter has become really interested in dinosaurs lately. We've been watching a lot of YouTube videos about dinosaurs and browsing through books at the library.

So when she was flipping through shows for kids on Amazon Prime and saw the new Amazon Original Kids series, Dino Dana, she was pretty excited to watch it! Imagine the disappointment in her heart when she discovered it hadn't been released yet!

Mommy to the rescue! My kind friends at Amazon sent me a screener link for the first few episodes of Dino Dana and Kaylee was immediately hooked!

It's a super cute show about a 9-year old girl who is obsessed with dinosaurs. One day at the library, after she'd checked out every library book in dinosaurs available, the librarian gave her a special Dino Field Guide. She was told to keep it as long as she'd like, as long as she passes it off to another aspiring paleontologist when she's done with it.

The guide is quite the magical book! Within minutes of talking about how she wants to learn how her favorite dinosaur protects its baby, a mommy dinosaur appears for her to study!

Dana has a special backpack that lets her transform into any dino species she wants. So, the dinos often think Dana is one of their own, allowing her to get super close to them and study them.

Each episode of the series features fun facts about dinosaurs and applies them to kid-relatable experiences. It's a really fun and interactive show that provides plenty of education on dinosaurs for your little dinosaur fanatic. And the CGI animation is really great too.

If you want to check out Dino Dana, it debuts on Prime Video, Friday, May 26, 2017 in the U.S. and U.K.!

To celebrate the debut of Dino Dana, Kaylee and I decided to whip up a batch of Dino Discovery bath bombs. Each bath bomb looks like an ordinary bath bomb, but when they dissolve in the bath, your child is left with a cute little dino.

After Bath time, you can sit down together and watch an episode of Dino Dana or learn about the dinosaur they excavated from their bath bomb. It's a great way to make learning fun!

You'll get 6-8 bath bombs from this recipe using these bath bomb molds. However, you can make them in just about anything you'd like.

DIY Dino Discovery Bath Bombs

Ingredients

  • 2 cups baking soda
  • 1 cup epsom salts
  • 1 cup citric acid powder
  • Essential oils of choice (our favorites are Otis' blend, PJ's blend and Skin Soother)
  • Mica powder
  • Witch hazel (in a spray bottle)
  • Olive oil spray
  • Mini Dinosaurs

Supplies

  • 2 mixing bowls
  • Measuring cup
  • Fork
  • Bath bomb molds
  • Hair ties (optional)

Directions

  1. In a large mixing bowl, mix the baking soda, epsom salts and citric acid until well combined.
  2. If you want to make more than one color of bath bombs, divide the mixture between 2 (or more) mixing bowls. I divided mine into two.
  3. Add about 10 drops of essential oils to each bowl (when using 2 bowls). Using a fork to blend it into your mixture.
  4. Add about 1 teaspoon of mica powder to each bowl (if using 2 bowls). Stir until color is well combined. The color will darken more after you add the witch hazel, so don't go overboard or you'll be scrubbing the mica from your tub.
  5. Spray the mixture gently with witch hazel, then mix with your hands to incorporate. Keep spraying and mixing until you get to a point where it's starting to clump, but is still dry. You don't want it to get sticky. It should crumble like kinetic sand. If it's too wet, it won't set up properly.
This is what it looks like when you try to make bath bombs from a mixture with too much witch hazel (it will activate the citric acid and cause it to expand). You can still use them, it just won't look pretty.
  6. Spray your bath bomb molds with olive oil spray.
  7. Next, press press your bath bomb mixture down into your bath bomb mold, leaving space for the hidden surprise.
  8. Add the toy, then pack in more of the bath bomb mixture.
  9. Fill the other side of the mold with the mixture, then spray both halves lightly with witch hazel. Press the halves together, making sure the mixture is pressed well together. If you want, you can secure them with hair ties like I did, but it's not necessary.
  10. Allow the bath bombs to sit for about an hour, then carefully remove them from the molds and set them out to cure.
  11. Let them cure overnight or for 24 hours until they're completely hardened.
  12. Pop one in the bath for bath time. They will start fizzing right away.
  13. Your kids will love the surprise they find!

What dino would your child like to find in their bath bombs?
