Three Tips for Going Back to School for Graduate Work

Having worked full time is a benefit, and in many cases a requirement, for students to be admitted to graduate School. Two or more years of work experience gives a solid foundation for principles that will be taught at a school such as the Denver University full-time MBA program. However, transitioning from full-time employment to full-time school can be difficult. Following are three tips that can help you be successful in school:

  • Get the support of your family.
  • Designate specific study time.
  • Get well-acquainted with your instructors.

Family SupportFamily support is critical for successful schooling. Going back to school puts a lot of stress and demands on your time. Likewise, it puts a lot of stress on your family. They are used to having you around to watch a movie, run errands, or help in the house. If you are to be successful, it is imperative that your family understands what will be required. Sit down with your spouse and children, or your parents and other family members. Have open, frank discussions with them about both your needs and their needs. Focus on the long-term outcomes and benefits of making the sacrifice now. As you progress through your schooling, revisit these issues with your family members often.

Study Time It is critical to establish your schedule for studying and working on projects. Look at your schedule and make an appointment for studying, even if you are studying alone. Then, make sure you keep this appointment. As the school year progresses, you might find that you need to adjust your study time. However, studying on a schedule helps you to keep your life in balance. When you are not scheduled to study, let it go and enjoy life. This will actually make your studies more productive.

Course InstructorsInstructors and professors at schools such as the Denver University full-time MBA program are very interested in their students’ success. Generally speaking, the best instructors are reserved for the graduate-level students. They will do what they can to help you. However, they are very busy. Therefore, it is important for you to reach out and establish valuable contact with the professors who can help you succeed in school and mentor you in your career.
