When my daughter discovered she loves good Wine, we decided that every time we are in wine country we would visit different tasting rooms.  On our recent road trip to Monterey, we visited Twisted Roots Wine in Carmel Valley Village.

Twisted Roots is not your ordinary tasting room.  The owners Josh and Julie were taking care of customers and warmly greeting everyone as they walked in.   They made everyone feel right at home.  While Julie served customers and club members with wine and good conversation, Josh joined us in the 1918 Room.

He humbly shared his incredible journey.  While we took in the atmosphere and subtle wine that can be enjoyed alone.  Josh had no idea my daughter needed to hear his story.

Josh and Julie studied agriculture at California Polytechnic University San Luis Obispo.   That is where Josh discovered his love for wine after his college roommate gave him his first glass of wine.

Julie’s family has been in the wine business for many years.  When Josh wanted to go into the wine business Julie’s family was very supportive.

We listened to Josh in the newly renovated Twisted Roots.  He spoke on the labor of love it took for them to move from a tiny space to the beautifully decorated space we were sitting in on this day.   He recalled days of dreaming of what the new space would look like years prior.  His dreams are now a reality.

Twisted Roots sells wine in the tasting room, but they also sell it online and in a few retail stores.  Josh told us about the first store that allowed him to sell his wine there.  We all laughed when he said he did not know how much he should sell it for when the store agreed to put it in their store.  Aside from that, he came up with a plan to make sure that his wine was selling.   These days he knows how to price his wine and he his not worried about it selling.

We also got a kick out of his story about his wine club.  One day he was at work.  (When Josh is not at Twisted Roots he his at is day job as a farmer.)  One of his coworkers asked if she could join his wine club.  Josh said of course!  Little did she know, he did not have a wine club.  He went home that night and created a wine club membership form and presented it to her the next day.  Some years later she is still a member.    Being the honest man he seems to be, he later shared with her that he did not have a wine club until she asked about it.

My daughter is a recent college graduate that is starting her own business and is facing growing pains.  Although she has witnessed my growth while being self-employed she needed to hear Josh’s story.   She did not know I invited her on this trip was to discuss her plans in a relaxed environment.  Meeting Josh is what she needed and it helped me with discussing her plans.

She left Twisted Roots with a bottle of wine, words of wisdom, encouragement, and motivation.  This was such a great Carmel Valley wine experience.
