A tradition they have in Germany and many other countries nowadays are the Weihnachtsmärkte (plural for Weihnachtsmarkt) or Chistkindmärkte. Those are street markets mostly in the main town squares that are associated with the time before and after Christmas. They originated in the German-speaking regions in the Middle Ages. Today the sale lots of food, drinks, deserts, pottery, scarfs, clothes, toys, Christmas decorations and much more.

Munich is one of the best places if you want to experience the unforgettable feelings that a Weihnachtsmarkt can offer. Most of them are opened by the end of November and last until New Year’s Eve, so you have plenty of time to visit all of them. There are so many of them, that you will actually need to go out a couple of times.

Pro tip: If you want to see the whole beauty of the Weihnachtsmarkt, go and visit one around 16:00 o’clock. In Munich the sun sets early so you will catch the golden hour, sunset and the glowing of all the little lights, that shine even brighter if you are going with a close friend. All of these will even further enhance the experience.

The only downfall of going there after 16:00 o’clock is the crowd. Unless you don’t have any problems with tight spaces and too many people bumping into you the whole time, my tip counts for you.

One of the most common things they sell is the mulled wine or glühwein in German. That’s a beverage made from red wine mulled with various types of spices or fruits and it can be both alcoholic and non-alcoholic, depends on the customer’s desire.  They also sell many different kinds the traditional German sausages called würste – Bratwürste, Rindswürste, Knackwürste, and Bockwürste and Currywürste. The variety of the würste they make at the street market can please everyone’s taste unless you are vegetarian or vegan of course.

But even if that’s not your cup of tea – just go have a walk in Munich at dawn. Everything shines, there are so many lights, Christmas decoration all over the city centre and even in the suburban. I swear you won’t be disappointed.
