Trump Tells Pregnant Army Widow Her Husband ‘Knew What He Signed Up For’

Congresswoman recounts story of Trump talking to widow

Myeshia Johnson is the pregnant Widow of a soldier killed in an ambush in Niger at the beginning of this month. She was  in the car with her congresswoman yesterday when she received a call from Trump, presumably to offer condolences.

But let’s back up for a minute.

Trump was pressed by a reporter this week on whether he’d contacted families of the four Green Berets who were killed in the ambush in Niger weeks ago. He hadn’t, but instead of answering the question he’d been asked about his own actions, he said “If you look at President Obama and other presidents, most of them didn’t make calls. A lot of them didn’t make calls. I like to call when it’s appropriate.” Actually, they did make calls. And show up. And offer the condolences that only human beings with an actual heart can offer. But aside from that — can this man answer a straight question without resorting to the deflecting tactics of a second grader?

Now back to the phone call that he obviously made to scramble to make good on his press conference claims that he indeed reaches out to grieving widows. Florida Congresswoman Frederica Wilson was in the car with the pregnant widow of Army Sgt. La David T. Johnson when Trump called her on Tuesday. She heard the conversation on speaker phone.

Wilson claims Trump said to the widow: “But you know he must have known what he signed up for,” she recounted to NBC6. “How could you say that to a grieving widow? I couldn’t believe… and he said it more than once. I said this man has no feelings for anyone. This is a young woman with child who is grieved to her soul.”

A pregnant mother, grieving the loss of her husband — carrying a baby he will never know.

“Everyone knows when you go to war you could possibly not come back alive but you don’t remind a grieving widow of that,” Wilson told NBC. “That’s so insensitive.” Wilson also claims Trump didn’t remember the fallen soldier’s name. She claims after Johnson’s widow hung up the phone she said, “He didn’t even remember his name. That’s the hurting part.”

Wilson spoke to CNN about overhearing the conversation, and how she felt about it. “We don’t have many heroes in our young men in Miami-Dade County, but he was a hero for us,” she told host Don Lemon. “I asked them to give me the phone, because I wanted to speak with him. And I was going to curse him out. That was my reaction… I was livid.”

In true Trump fashion, he awoke at the break of dawn today to deny he ever said that, via — you guessed it — Twitter.

Sure. We’re supposed to believe this man, who told a lie every day for the first 40 days he was in office — and that’s only the beginning. The New York Times compiled a running list of Trump’s lies since he began the presidency, and it’s so vast that it’s overwhelming to read. “Many Americans have become accustomed to President Trump’s lies. But as regular as they have become, the country should not allow itself to become numb to them,” the Times wrote. “So we have catalogued nearly every outright lie he has told publicly since taking the oath of office.”

But apart from the fact that we know this man regularly lies, could he stoop any lower? Challenging the widow of a fallen soldier?  Make no mistake, that’s essentially what he’s doing now, as she’ll be forced to make a comment to set this straight. Will he call her a liar, too? It’s not unfathomable that he would. Remember this is a man who belittled the mother of a fallen soldier, by implying the Muslim woman was not allowed to speak as her husband delivered a passionate speech at the Democratic convention about their son — an American war hero.

Trump took days to publicly discuss the attacks, which is horrible on its own. And when he finally did, he stooped even lower than normal by suggesting Obama didn’t call grieving families either (LIE) and even lower by suggesting reporters contact his Chief of Staff, John Kelly, to see if Obama had offered condolences when his son was killed in Afghanistan.

These actions aren’t just vile, they are the actions of someone who is either truly unhinged or completely without a conscience or soul.

Condolences to Myeshia Johnson. As mothers, our hearts break at the thought that she’s lost her love and father to her children, that her kids will grow up without their father, and that he’ll never be able to lay eyes on the little one still in her womb. We are all unspeakably indebted to this man, who gave his life for our country.
