27 Şubat 1923 doğumlu ünlü caz sanatçısıdır.Amerikalı tenor caz saksafonisti, bebop türünün öncülerinden sayılır.Daha  yaklaşık yedi yaşındayken,  Duke Ellington orkestrası ile bir konsere katıldı.1940 yılında Lionel Hampton ile çalıştı.Daha sonra kendi grubunu kurmuştur.50 li yılarda uyuşturucu kullanımında dolayı sıkıntılı günler geçirmiştir.60 lı ve 70 li yıllarda tekrardan müzikal kariyerine devam etmiş ve Avrupada popüler hale gelmiştir.1976 yılında Amerikaya geri dönmüş ve geliştirdiği tarzla dikkat çekmiştir.1986 da "Round Midnight" adlı filmle Oscar'a aday olmuş ve bu filmdeki alkolik saksafoncu roluyle kendinden söz ettirmiştir.Bu filmin soundtrack albümüyle Grammy ödülü kazanmıştır.
Albümleri genelde tempolu ve canlıdır. diğer ünlü blue note müzisyenleri gibi Dexter Gordon da pek çok ünlü isimle çalışmış harika albümlere imza atmıştır.
 25 Nisan 1990 da  böbrek yetmezliğinden öldü.1978 ve 1980 yılında Down Beat dergisi tarafından yılın müzisyeni seçilmiştir.

Dexter Gordon (February 27, 1923 – April 25, 1990) was an American jazz tenor saxophonist. He was among the earliest tenor players to adapt the bebop musical language of people like Charlie Parker, Dizzy Gillespie, and Bud Powell to the instrument. His studio and live performance career spanned over 40 years.
