Putting It All Together

I thought I’d take some time to say a few words about my music arranging process. There are many ways to approach this. The example I am going to mention would be wring for a Quartet. I do a lot of my writing at the Piano before entering everything into Finale. A good piano sketch can easily translate into a full instrumental arrangement. The method I use is to start with a pianon version in Finale and then add staves for the instrument you are writing the arrangement. A string quartet has two violins, a viola, and a cello. Copy and paste the treble line of your piani version into each of the violin parts. Then copy and paste the bass part into the viola and cello parts. After that, go ahead and delete the piano parts. That will give you a good start. Next time I’ll talk about how to expand on this idea of taking a piano version and copy the lines into each instrument part.
