We recently caught up with DEE JAY SILVER to ask him a few questions. Check it out below:
Having been a DJ for over 15 years, do you think the technological advancement of DJ hardware has oversimplified the art of mixing records?
For sure, now you can learn to DJ on YouTube. Half of me says that’s absolute bullshit, the other part of me is kinda jealous!!! Hahaha
What’s your approach to curating a set list while performing on a stadium tour versus performing in a night club setting?
In a night club, I just kinda go with the flow…play to the crowd. When we do a stadium show, I have to make sure the language isn’t too offensive…gotta be respectful of the kids! I usually set up a file with songs that will work, kind of a skeleton, but I never pre set or make a playlist. I always let the crowd tell me what they’re feeling that night. Certain cities have certain songs that the crowd expect, like when we play Fenway Park in Boston, you better play “Sweet Caroline!”
Which has been your most memorable residency as a DJ?
Rehab at the Hard Rock is home for sure! The entire staff rocks! Bravo, Steve Kay, the bartenders, the other DJs, even down to the hosts…Always a party at REHAB!
What are some of the most common misconceptions you’ve heard about DJing? How would you address them?
One thing is when people say we just play an iTunes playlist…it’s not at all that easy. We spend hours searching for music, looking for remixes that will rock the party and hours in the studio on production making your own edits so you sound different.
People think we just fly around the world partying, drinking and showing up to work about midnight! Yeah, we get to see amazing things, meet great people and travel, but the fourth 6am flight of the week kicks your ass…and that flight home Monday morning is brutal!! They also don’t understand we spend most of your “OFF” days on the phone selling yourself, booking shows, meetings with your team, building your brand, writing and producing new music, recording radio shows, booking flights, and spending time with your family. I wouldn’t have it any other way and am thankful I have the opportunity to do this every night!
Now that you’re based in Nashville, how does living in a music city influence your artistic development as a DJ/songwriter?
For sure, so many talented songwriters, musicians, and just all around creative people…everyone is always looking to create new music and always ready to help!
Do you think there is potential for more crossover tracks between Country and Dance music?
Music is so wide open now, the sky is the limit as far as crossing over music. As long as you have super groups like Florida Georgia Line doing music with The Chainsmokers and Jason Aldean with Ludacris, there is always something unexpected and welcomed in this business! Good music is good music!
If you could collaborate with any Dance music producer(s), who would it be and why?
Love to work with DJ Khaled…he’s a musical genius and he only works with the best of the best. Another person I would love to get down with is Timbaland, and total bucket list would be to work with Daft Punk!
