REVIEW | Mysteron’s new EP ‘Parallel Universe’ is classic post-punk weirdness with a grumpy sci-fi vibe

Mysteron is a band out of time. Their new EP is fittingly called ‘Parallel Universe,’ and intentionally or not, evokes a universe where the gorgeous intersection of glam and post-punk at the tail end of the ‘70s lasted into the new generation.

Now we can’t confirm whether they are named for the Martian race from the ‘Captain Scarlet and The Mysterons’ television franchise, but the band’s press release promotes as a feature of their stage show a “caped man seemingly confused by the world in which he lives.” Ziggy much?

The stand out tracks that can’t be missed are the grumpy nihilistic ‘Love Etc’ and the delightfully bouncy, self obsessed and very impressively played ‘Me Me Moi,’ the latter of which features a drum part that can’t be missed and a strange lo-fi Twin Peaks reminiscent music video that’s worth watching in its own right.

All of these details betray a hyper-coherent awareness of thematic branding. Slamming together lyrics and vocals reminiscent of Franz Ferdinand’s most impenetrable introspections with the spaced out mythologizing of David Bowie, the group is a fuzztone black-hearted sludge-punch begging for a full album release.

In an era swarmed with solo songwriters and electronic two-or-three pieces, Mysteron is the rare and exciting five member band in the old rock tradition, or at least a tradition once new that has grown old and lives again in whippersnappers like these.
