Angela Kong – VIOLIN, PIANO

Angela Kong is a very experienced private violin teacher who has taught many violin students in her home studio in Auckland, New Zealand. Her students vary from complete beginners to advanced level performers. Private lessons focus on instrumental skills as well as aural, sight-reading and music theory. Angela focuses more on the daily progress of the student as well as the student’s behaviour in class. She regards students’ psychological development as just as important as instrumental development. Angela’s Master’s thesis was a research paper on how to combine traditional public school teaching with violin pedagogy.

Angela began studying with Dimitri Atanassov in 2007. A year later she became the deputy concertmaster of the Macleans Symphony Orchestra as well as the featured soloist for a number of performances including the Singapore Tour (2008) and KBB competition (2009).

In 2010 Angela was accepted to the Bachelor of Music degree majoring in Classical Violin Performance at the University of Auckland with an NZQA music scholarship. She began studying with Elizabeth Hollowell in 2010 while completing her Bachelor of Music at the University of Auckland, New Zealand.

Angela obtained her Bachelor of Music (Honors) majoring in classical violin performance. Angela also holds a Master of Arts in Teaching from the Longy School of Music, Bard College. She is currently a Teaching Artist at the Youth Orchestra of Los Angeles.

Angela has been an active member in university musical activities. She has been a member and second violin leader of the University Symphony Orchestra and University Strings Ensemble, performed as a soloist at the University Graduation Ceremony, and performed in several masterclasses with internationally renowned musicians such as Elizabeth Wallfisch, Feng Ning and Firmian Lerner. Angela was awarded a Lilburn Trust Performance Award in 2012 from the University of Auckland. Angela is currently an active member of the Caltech-Occidental Symphony Orchestra.

In 2015, she performed as one the featured soloists at the coronation of His Majesty, King George Tupou VI of Tonga, an event attended by many world dignitaries including the Crown Prince of Japan and members of European royal families. In 2016 she also performed at a fundraising concert organized by Michael Dukakis, the 65th and 67th Governor of Massachusetts.
