JZO Interview

What first drew you into music production and EDM in particular?

You are one of the newest up and coming EDM producers we have discovered from Sydney, Australia and your latest track “Back” is one of our all time favorite Bass heavy trap tracks. Could you tell us more about how you came up with your sound? Also what is your creative process like when making a track?

During the production process I always start with experimenting with sounds until I find the right one that I’m happy to use. This involves a lot of tweaking and designing until you’re satisfied with what you have. That’s how I actually came up with the main sound that drives this track. Instead of writing chords or a melody on this track I was simply after something that flowed well and that was the result of my hands moving across the midi keyboard and my brain agree-ing with what was being created.

Your latest remix of “Lazy Mut” is another great example of how capable you are as a producer! The mixing is on point and the melodies/ideas are out of this world! Could you tell us more about your creative process when making a remix? How is it different from an original mix?

In terms of my creative process I will always listen to the original first so I have a similar inspiration to the track from it. I will then write the chords and drums to the track and then build my sounds around it. I know some producers would completely avoid listening to the original if they can and try and make something completely brand new which is fine but in my opinion I think you’re actually making a remake of the track instead of a remix.

The difference compared to making an original track than a remix is not a big as you’re still the same person being creative and making music. I guess with original you have no boundaries and it’s a blank canvas in front of you whereas with a remix you kind of have something to work around with….if that makes sense.

Your brand and the mystery behind JZO is captivating, could you tell us more about how and why you came up with this character? Also how did you create your epic mask ?

A lot of the times people focus more on who is making the track or singing on it than the actual music itself. With the Mask I wanted to take myself completely out of the equation as the mask is an extension of the music and I plan to keep it that way. You want to find out more about me? Listen to the music.

The mask is actually an old halloween mask that I spray painted myself to give it a more rugged look. Haha. I have plans to have a custom one built in the near future.

Coming from Australia do you have any favorite clubbing spots to recommend to our readers?

Surprisingly, with the music that I’m involved in I haven’t really gone out clubbing much in my life. But if you’re after some trap music, I’ve heard the CHINESE LAUNDRY goes off along with IVY.

What are your goals for 2019? Any upcoming projects we can get excited

about Definitely more music. More of me. So stay tuned for new originals as well as remixes. In terms of goals, I’d love to see my music being played out by some of the producer/djs that I look up to – JayKode, Thieves, ATLiens, Dyro, Ekali….I could go on but I wouldn’t do justice haha. And I’d possibly love to play a show here in Sydney before the end of the year so let’s see what happens!
