The Nation's Favourite Summer Songs

This summer has been typically British and it feels like there has been more rain than sun, but as we inch closer to September, British people are wondering whether to stay-cay or vay-cay this August. A recent poll from community-run network giffgaff has revealed the nations Favourite Summer Songs and compiled a playlistof songs to suit our mood for summer 2017. The research has revealed that The Clash’s Should I Stay or Should I Go is the UK’s go-to anthem. It features recent music hits who have hit the top of the charts as well as classics.
"Stay" hits include Sam Smith’s 'Stay With Me', 'Stay Another Day', by East 17 and the 1991 top hit 'Stay', by Shakespeare’s Sister. Among the most popular “Go” songs were Queen classic 'The Show Must Go On', Fleetwood Mac’s 'Go Your Own Way' and 'Don’t Let the Sun Go Down on Me', by Elton John and George Michael.
However, punk band The Clash claim top place with a song that has both 'stay' and 'go' in the title
Musicians return to the “stay or go” theme time and time again, with top music right now such as ‘Stay’ by Kygo appearing in the list alongside classics from the previous generation such as ‘Every Time You Go Away’ by Paul Young.
Rihanna also made the cut with her song ‘Stay’, as did Celine Dion’s famous tearjerker from Titanic, ‘My Heart Will Go On’.
Other songs to make the top 20 included the classic Walker Brothers song, 'Stay With Me Baby, Wake Me Up Before You Go Go' (a double whammy) by George Michael, and Al Green's super smooth 'Let’s Stay Together' .
Six out of 10 of those polled said that the place they most listened to music was in the home. Only 18% chose to listen to music at work. Almost a quarter of people polled said they didn’t care for music (24%), which increased dramatically to 38% amongst people aged 60 and over. Almost nine out of in 10 respondents aged 16 to 29 couldn’t imagine their life without music, showing a clear generational divide when it comes to the importance of music.
The research was conducted by the mobile phone network giffgaff.
Tom Rainsford, board director at giffgaff said: "The freedom of staying or going has clearly been an inspiration for many musicians.  It’s interesting that Brits have chosen songs from across the decades as their favourites – Rihanna is in there right alongside the likes of Fleetwood Mac."
‘We actually chose to soundtrack our new campaign film with one of the top 20 songs, the Walker Brothers’ Stay With Me Baby.”
Other songs making up the top 20 include ‘Don’t Let the Sun Go Down on Me’ by Elton John and George Michael, ‘Stay’ by Shakespeare’s Sister and ‘Where Do Broken Hearts Go’ by Whitney Houston.
