In 1968, the original Mustang Cobra Jet appeared at the Winternationals drag racing event in California, where it dominated the NHRA Super Stock class. Now Ford Performance has built a new version to commemorate that début.
The 50th Anniversary Cobra Jet features a 5.2 litre V8 engine with a Whipple supercharger. An output figure hasn’t been disclosed yet, but this particular Mustang is expected to complete a quarter-mile run in the mid-eight-second range. Top speed meanwhile is reckoned to be in excess of 150 mph (241 km/h).
Obviously, the car’s primary objective is to travel in a straight line as quickly as possible. To help achieve that goal, a solid rear axle and two-way coil-over dampers are fitted, plus the ride height is adjustable. A Strange Engineering low-drag disc brake set-up is another key chassis upgrade.
Available with a choice of either Race Red or Oxford White paintwork and optional 50th Anniversary graphics, the 2018 Mustang Cobra Jet has an MSRP of $130,000 in the United States (approximately £102,250 or €114,300 at current exchange rates). Fittingly, only 68 examples are going to be produced.
