Mexican Beauty – The #4.9 BMW R nineT Cafe Racer by Catrina Motosurf

We just want to head out to the crystal clear beaches of Pacific coast on this gorgeous #4.9 BMW R nineT Cafe Racer by Catrina Motosurf and you should too.

The intricate relationship of motorcycles with the sea waves and the surfing culture is something hard to neglect. Ever since the surf culture starting getting momentum in the 70s, motorcycles have become symbiotic with it. As the surfers searched for more pristine, more secluded beaches, motorcycles were more than ready to take them there. Looking back, it was also the times when we got the iconic motorcycles like the Ducati Scrambler, which were a hit among the surfing masses. And when you talk about beaches, you have to talk about the West Coast of the Americas. And when we talk about that, we also talk about Mexico’s Catrina Motosurf. They build some incredible customs drenched in the soul of their environment and the nostalgic aura of the surfing 70s culture. There latest build, the #4.9 BMW R Ninet Cafe Racer, stays true to it as well.

Catrina Motosurf is based out of Guadalajara, Capital of Jalisco State. For those not in the know, this is the region which lends almost everything that is famous about Mexico, its mariachi music, the food, the smell of birria, everything. This is also a place that boasts of its glorious beaches and lush green forests. And then, there is the spectacular and pristine countryside, a motorcyclists delight to ride through towards the crystal clear waters. Thus there cannot be any place more special than this to create builds that can make one go weak on their knees. The blokes at Catrina wanted to have a say in the ever growing craziness over the R nineT around the world. And the result is this stunning and immaculately build called the #4.9 BMW R nineT Café Racer.

This was the team’s first job with a brand new bike and they wanted to be much more than just a few part changes and a new paint job kind of a build. The idea was to create a radical build with their modern interpretation of the humble Cafe Racer based on an R nineT. Once the brand new R nine was shed of its cloths, the team started to work upon the #4.9 BMW R nineT Cafe Racer. The engine was kept separate along with the pile of parts they has disassembled from the bike.

Catrina Motosurf gave the #4.9 BMW R nineT Cafe Racer build a new sub frame to stay true to their clean, simple and classic. The stock bike has a unique four-part frame and the bike looks like it has been made up of a large number of bits and pieces. The idea was to have a much more stable, perfect stance and symmetrical design. The new custom subframe at the rear was made for the seat. The base for the seat was then made out from old sail boats aluminium. With a new subframe and an aluminium seat base, a custom eat was required. It was build in house with a metal sheet and seat cushion was hand carved on it. The team then wrapped this new seat for the #4.9 BMW R nineT Cafe Racer in black leather upholstery.

The major eye catching detail on this #4.9 BMW R nineT Cafe Racer is its big fuel tank. The idea was to simply the design of the stock fuel tank on the bike In order to add a vintage touch to it.  The team removed the airbox while using custom aluminium units to fill the clunky side covers. After this, a stainless mesh was added to help reduce the visual bulk and provide much cleaner surface. Cafe racers are supposed to me minimal and the team went ahead with their work by replacing front plastic mudguard with a hand rolled one. Going further, the fine guys at Catrina Motosurf either shaved down or smoothed out most of the stock bikes supports and brackets.

The must have super cool side plates were then installed; these wore the bike name – #4.9. In essence it would have been the Build Five for Motosurf, however, as an ode to the R nineT, the team decided to go for this.  Catrina wanted to have a paint scheme #4.9 BMW R nineT Cafe Racer which remind of BMW colours but not copy it. It was managed by designing a straight horizontal line that runs through the whole bike. It was finished in a flat finish instead of a shiny one, lending the #4.9 BMW R nineT Cafe Racer build more aggression. This was well combined with the use of black powder coat on various surfaces.

The engine too, was given a matt black paint along with exposed aluminum fins. More of the dark stuff was added to the exhaust with matt black ceramic coat. This all means that all attention is gathered by the huge curvaceous tank and nothing else. Removal of airbox meant that twin K&N pod filter let the breathing happen for the engine. A custom exhaust was build to let the trick single sided swingarm to get eyeballs. The new unit is a stainless steel MASS one and it has a hot rod style twin exit finish. Motosurf also attached a new Power Commander and Auto-Tune system, improving performance. The Auto-Tune unit lets the bike to constantly adjusts the mixtures based on all available live inputs.

The lads continued with the stock suspension for the #4.9 BMW R nineT Cafe Racer. However, the front 46mm USD forks and triple trees were blacked out and so was the swingarm. At the rear, the monoshock was painted in a shade that matched the white on the tank. The brakes, although great, were still replaced for better performance and aesthetics. Original discs gave way for braking rotors, while shaved levers were powder coated. Now it was time to tinker with the bikes riding position. A much more aggressive and sporty posture was created by replacing the stock handle bar with Woodcraft aluminium clip-ons. For the #4.9 BMW R nineT Cafe Racer build, the stock gauges were an absolute misfit. Thus Motogadget M-Switch Mini controls and a Motoscope Pro gauge ame for duty. This new unit now sits on top of a custom-made aluminium bracket made in a CNC.

After the team was satisfied with the new cluster, they installed their trademark headlight grills. We also liked the stunning minimal brake lights that have been embedded into the edge of the seat. This gives the builds rear a clean and sporty stance.  By the time the team was already through the above mentioned work, they had already shaved 30 kg from the stock bike. They further reduced the weight by having a tiny Lithium ion battery supplied by Ballistic Performance. This means that the bike now has a sumptuous power to weight ratio to go with its looks. To aid road as well as rides to the beach, Avon TrailRaider’s were the tyres of choice for the #4.9 BMW R nineT Cafe Racer build.
