The city is, renowned for its reputation as one of the best couple vacation places, as well as the best bachelor party destination in America. There are a lot of things to be enjoyed in New Orleans, including the food, historic places, drinking, an amazing nightlife, and of course, jazz; no wonder the city attracts a lot of people.

There are several options to select from when it comes to things to do in this city. So whether you are in for Mardi Gras, or you’re a music lover who is all about the city’s Jazz and Heritage Festival, you are in for a good time. But in order to get the best out of your stay in the city, we have decided to provide you with an informative guide on some of the essential things to expect in New Orleans.

THINGS TO DO

Below is a list of four awesome things to do in New Orleans.

The French Quarter Phantoms Tour – If you are a fan of “The Originals”, then you probably would have heard about this part of the city and how it is mystical. Looking to learn some local history while getting spooked at the same time? This is the right place for you. Before the tour starts, everyone converges on Rampart Street, at the back of a bar otherwise known as the “office”. From there, you’ll start your guided tour all through the cemetery, learning interesting local facts as you go. Don’t forget to check out the tomb of some the local legends, such as the tomb of Marie Laveau, the Voodoo Queen; the story and the stonework are things to look forward to –they will awe you.

The National WWII Museum – It’s no surprise that this complex and magnificent structure gets thousands of visitors on a daily basis. The National WWII Museum is one building that houses narrative exhibits which portray the story of what happened during the World War. You get to enjoy exhibits that are well detailed, and recorded events that are backed by personal accounts from eyewitnesses. The main halls include the Pacific and European Theaters, The Home Front, and the D-Day Invasion, an amazing 4-d movie presentation, and immersive submarine exhibit. You’ll surely be thrilled by what you’ll see and learn.

The Music Box Village – Created in such a way that it looks like a post-apocalyptic fortress made out of wood, the Music Box Village is one place that’s fitting for every music lover. You are allowed to be free, shout, play, and do all sorts here. This makes it an incredible place to take your kids to. This music venue has small “houses” built of metal, wood, and plastic, and they all come in different styles. Each of these houses has their own instruments, which they play quite well. Bands are also allowed to perform. In short, this place is a very fun place.

Orpheum Theater – The renovation of this building has led to the revival of New Orleans’ Theater District. Initially constructed back in 1918, this building was dormant for 10 years after the federal levees failed in 2005. The Beaux Art beauty now houses the Louisiana Philharmonic. Once the Phil starts, you should expect to see comedians, touring bands, and a wide variety of other shows. You might even get to enjoy some classic movies, which will be backed by live orchestras.

OTHERS THINGS TO DO IN NEW ORLEANS

Below are some other things you can do in New Orleans:

  • Visit Crescent Park
  • Enjoy Live Music at Tipitinas
  • Explore Ashley Longshore Studio Gallery
  • Get mesmerized in the Sydney and Walda Besthoff Sculpture Garden.

TYPICAL COSTS IN NEW ORLEANS

Hostel and Hotels – A dorm room in New Orleans will cost you about $30, while a B&B double room or guest house will be within the range of $100-$150. If you are looking to live exclusively, you’ll be spending up to $200 for a four star double hotel room.

Food – There are quite a number of places where you can eat in New Orleans, but for most, a cheap takeout or self-cater meal will cost you up to ten dollars and a bottle of beer stands between $3-$5. If you want a better restaurant, you’ll need to dish out $50-$70 from your pockets, and for those who would like to have a fancy dinner, you should expect to spend between $150-$200.

HOW TO GET AROUND THE CITY

The Airport Shuttle – This is one of the best ways to transport yourself and your things from the New Orleans airport as it’s all about ease and convenience. These shuttles will take you right from the airport down to your hotel and they cost $40 per person for a round trip and $24 per person for a one-way trip. Additionally, you have the option of setting up a pickup schedule.

Taxi – Taxi rides are just the same in New Orleans as they are in other parts of the country. For a journey to the Central Business District from and to the airport, you’ll be spending up to $30 for one or two people. Each additional person will incur an extra $15. Taking a taxi is better if you are traveling in the company of some friends or family.

Rideshares – Rideshares like Lyft and Uber are also available in New Orleans. All you need to do is download the app of the desired company, sign up, choose your destination, and you’ll have your driver in no time.

Streetcars and Buses – Streetcars are great for traveling short distances within the city. With a streetcar or an RTA Bus (Regional Transit Authority Bus Lines), you get a one way trip for just $1.25, which will be paid in cash as drivers do not accept card payments. You can also opt for a day, three, five, or thirty-one days of unlimited passes.

BEST TIME TO VISIT NEW ORLEANS

The best time to go on tour or make a visit to the city is between February and May. The New Orleans weather will be very cool and most of the activities/celebrations done in the city would be in full swing. For those who are not particularly keen on Mardi Gras, you can visit the city in December or January as the city would be calm at this time and you won’t have to worry about reserving a hotel one year in advance. If you want to save some money on rooms, travel in the fall or the summer, but also keep it in mind that these periods are known for high humidity and stifling heat; and there’s also a chance of a hurricane happening.
