What is Hymenoplasty Surgery

Hymenoplasty Surgery involves reconstructing a woman’s hymen, or the tissue found at the entrance to the vagina.

The Surgical Process includes an incision being made on the torn away edges of the hymen, followed by the stitching of the pieces back together.

There may be many reasons for women to opt for this Operation, but the main reason is often to certify their virginity.

The end result of this surgical process is the restoral of the hymen. The post-surgery skin does not commonly show scars from surgery.

Following the surgery, women will bleed during their first intercourse as the membrane will tear.

The Hymenoplasty Operation

A woman can undergo the Hymenoplasty Operation on an outpatient basis.  On average, the duration of the operation will last less than 45 minutes.

The process begins after administering a general or local anaesthesia.  Then the doctor goes about stitching the skin membranes at the vaginal opening.

There is also the cosmetic Hymen Repair procedure in which a membrane is created without blood supply.

Alternatively, the flap of the vaginal lining that does contain a blood supply, can be used to graft the new hymen as well.

As long as the surgery goes along without any complications, the patient can typically get back to work within a day or two.  However, the complete healing process may take up to 8 weeks.

Are There Risks Involved?

Now that you can answer the question of “What is hymenoplasty?” the next question is “Is it safe?”

Any time a person goes under the knife, some risks are involved with it.  The person may be at Risk of getting some kind of infection, or be subjected to prolonged bleeding.

Secondly, there may be some side effects related to the anaesthesia.  But having said the above, these risks are associated with surgery in general and the hymenoplasty procedure is still considered safe.

As for the complications arising from the area of hymen repair, those are slim to none.  There may be rare occurrences when a woman may encounter what is known as stricture.

Stricture means the repair was overdone, making the opening too narrow. This is a short term problem because with regular sexual activity, the opening will get back to normal.

However, it is suggested that after this operation, a woman should abstain from penetrative sexual activities for a certain period of time which will be advised by the surgeon.

The Benefits

Hymenoplasty can be very helpful for the female gender. There are rituals and cultures where women have to prove their virginity, hence this surgery can get them their life back.
