Neti Pots To Treat Sinus Problems

Are you dealing with sinus problems? If you are, then you know how hard it gets to breathe from the nose.

Did You Know?

In the U.S., approx. 37 million people are affected by sinusitis, amongst which 33 million are chronic sinusitis patients.

Many people suffering from Sinus issues have opted for nasal saline irrigation for relief. Saline irrigation is a therapy that uses salt and water solution to flush out the nasal passages. The most popular form of nasal irrigation is the Neti pot.

Neti Pots

Neti pots are made out of ceramic or other material, like plastic or metal. They look like small genie lamps or teapots. This cleansing technique is traditionally known as “jalaneti” and is a yogic and Ayurveda practice.

Neti pots basically hold saline water that is poured into one nostril and drained out of another nostril. This technique treats sinus symptoms, clears nasal passage, reduces swelling, and help your natural defenses work better.

What does Nasal Irrigation do?

It’s believed that saline irrigation flushes out mucus and irritants from the sinuses, improving the flow of air through the nose. Saline irrigation also promotes the ciliary function of the sinuses and osmotically reduces edema. It also reduces nasal histamine concentrations for up to six hours and may reduce leukotriene concentrations for up to four hours. However, some experts say that chronic daily use of saline irrigation can remove important defenses like immune globulins from the nasal mucosa.

How to Make a Saline Solution?

There are various strategies for nasal irrigation including varying concentrations of saline, dosing intervals, volumes administered, and delivery devices. According to experts, limited use of neti pot once or twice a day is a good idea top prevent dryness and irritation. These are widely available in pharmacies and natural food stores. Two popular brands of neti pots that can be purchased are Sinu Cleanse and Neil Med’s Sinus Rinse.

You can buy pre-mixed packets of salt to add to water, or you can make your own salt mixture at home. The most commonly used recipe is:

  • 1 teaspoon of un-iodized salt (canning, kosher, pickling, or sea salt)
  • ½ teaspoon of baking soda
  • 2 – 3 cups (480 mL to 720 mL) of lukewarm water
  • Just mix these ingredients together and use them to fill your neti pot. Doubling the amount of salt to two teaspoons will make a stronger saline solution. Be sure to mix a fresh solution before each use.

How to Use the Neti Pot?

Follow these steps after filling your neti pot with the saline solution:

  • Lean directly over a sink.
  • Rotate your head so that one ear is facing the sink and one ear is facing toward the ceiling.
  • Gently insert the tip of the neti pot’s spout into your top nostril, so that a seal is formed.
  • Tip the neti pot up so that the salt water enters your top nostril. (You will need to breathe through your mouth).
  • The solution will begin to drain out of your other nostril.
  • Once the pot is empty, stand up straight, breathe out of both nostrils, and blow your nose into a tissue.
  • Refill the pot and repeat these steps for the other nostril.
