1. Senior high school athlete earns dream chance to keep playing football at Auburn University

Macon – C.J. Henry experienced his first seizure when he was in middle school. Over the next several years they steadily have gotten worse, to the point of having 2-3 per month just a year ago. In 2015, the state of Georgia passed House Bill 1 (H.B. 1) which legalized cannabis oil for a select group of diseases and disorders, including seizure disorders. C.J. has been able to take CBD oil for the past year and has been seizure free since. He was also able to earn guaranteed spot on the Auburn Tigers team as a preferred walk-on through his play on the football field.

2. House Bill 645, Medical Marijuana Cultivation Bill, advances closer to state legislative floor

Atlanta – One of the major problems with H.B. 1 is that although it does legalize the possession of cannabis oil, there was no infrastructure set up to sell oil to needing patients. This currently leaves them having to travel across state lines to get their medicine. H.B. 645 seeks to allow two licenses to grow and produce the oil to allow easier access to the 3,400 registered CBD users in the state.

4. A recent myAJC poll shows 77% of Georgians asked show support of an expansion of H.B. 1
Those readers asked support expanding state medical marijuana laws to allow for cultivation and distribution within the state. Support is up from the previous two years (73% in ’16 and 71% in ’17). Under current state law, registered CBD users have to travel outside of state lines to get their medicine.

5. Lawmaker introduces bill for recreational marijuana in Georgia
Atlanta – Curt Thompson, D – Tucker, introduced a bill last week allowing for recreational marijuana to allow citizens to possess up to an ounce and be be able to buy it from licensed stores. There is little chance that the bill will pass this year, but support is growing among legislators.
