Medical Issues That Can Cause Insomnia

There are several medical conditions that can cause insomnia. Some will cause mild sleep issues while others are more serious and can totally disrupt your sleep patterns. The medical condition can cause insomnia or discomfort, which makes it difficult to sleep. Examples of such medical issues include:

  • Arthritis
  • Hyperthyroidism or other endocrine problems

  • And more

The medications taken for medical issues like thyroid problems, high blood pressure, asthma, allergies or depression can cause insomnia. If you find that soon after you start taking a new medication that you have sleeping problems, the underlying cause is most likely the medication. You should be evaluated by your physician to determine if this is the factor causing your sleep issue.

Reviewing Your Insomnia

If you are having trouble sleeping, be it sleeping too much, not getting enough or having trouble falling asleep, contact a professional to be evaluated. Your doctor will be able to review your sleep issues, look at medications you take or medical conditions that you have. After a review of your medical history and current symptoms, treatment can be provided.

Treatments will vary based on the reason behind your insomnia. If a medication is the cause, it will be changed out to hopefully see you sleeping well again. Other treatment types for traditional insomnia issues include relaxation techniques such as meditation and deep breathing. Soundbed therapy is also an alternative. With soundbed therapy, acoustic therapy is used to balance your heart rate as well as your blood pressure. The treatment improves circulation and reduces muscle tension. You will find that this treatment type can be quite relaxing and help you to sleep well.
