Living the Dream- Finding Employment After College USING my Degree

Hi, all! Remember me? It’s been a while! You could say a lot has changed because, before 2016 turned into 2017, I was offered a full time position here at WORX! I remember it like it was yesterday - it was the week before Thanksgiving and I was called into our CEO’s office. Needless to say, I was shakin’ in my boots, racking my brain for any possibility that I did something wrong and internally pleading that I wasn’t about to lose my job (not that I had any reason to think so; I’ve just always been a total Nervous Nelly!) For months, I had been trying to work up the courage to inquire if there would be any room for me to join the Worx Fam after my internship wrapped up because I had never felt so at home (or encouraged to express myself) at my place of work in my 10+ years or so of experience holding down jobs.

Anyway, long story short, the daunting meeting was nothing other than a real, actual, salary job offer! I remember it took me days to wipe that smile off my face because I had been Living in a constant state of dread even months BEFORE graduating. Would I find work? Be able to pay my bills? Move out? Better yet, did I just waste four years of my life and a disgusting amount of money on a degree I would NEVER even get a chance to use? If you’re a recent or upcoming college grad, I am sure you can relate. We’ve all been there, where that terrifying storm of “what ifs” just won’t leave you alone. Especially if you were/are an art major, I’m sure you are more than familiar with the post-graduate dread of unemployment- or better yet, working some retail job at your childhood mall simply to pay off loans and make ends meet.

Since that day, it’s been about 8 months since I started here full time, and every day is a new adventure! Getting to say that you love your coworkers and that every day entails something different are two bragging rights not everyone has, but here at WORX both could not be more true! Since coming on full-time, I’ve only gotten to know the WORX fam more and more, and I work with some pretty awesome individuals who brighten my day each and every day here.

I’m sure that a whole lot of luck played some part in my becoming a full-timer here, but hard work and perseverance played an indispensable role in proving that I was up to the task. My advice to anyone still worrying? Start early (in terms of internships, cold calls, etc) in your job search and don’t give up! After all, everyone has to start out somewhere. :)
