Although this month marks the end of summer vacation for many families across the Miami Valley, there are still plenty of events and festivals to attend in Dayton! We’ve rounded up the latest and greatest in local attractions as well as interesting marketing news in this edition of the OG Weekender.

Stop by Art in the City

Downtown Dayton will be buzzing with arts activities this First Friday, with the featured event, Art in the City. You can enjoy dance performances, yarn/crochet “bombs”, arts and crafts-making stations, and other visual arts in the five-block “art crawl” between K12 and the Dayton Visual Arts Center. This event also kicks off the second annual juried art show, which features the work of 25 local artists in local businesses.

Get curious at the Dayton Mini Maker Faire

You probably already knew that Dayton is home to historic inventors and innovators like the Wright Brothers, Edward Deeds, and Charles Kettering (to name just a few). Well, this weekend you can celebrate Dayton’s maker heritage by attending the 2^nd annual Dayton Mini Maker Fair on Saturday and Sunday at Carillon Historical Park. All ages are welcome to witness new projects, experiments and hobbies by the city’s brightest makers and even learn some new skills.

Book lovers rejoice! It’s time for the big reveal of the new main Dayton Metro Library in Downtown Dayton, and the library is hosting a community celebration on Saturday, August 5. In addition to touring the newly remodeled library at 215 E. Third Street, you can also attend their street festival, complete with face painting, the Library Bookmobile, balloon sculptures, chalk art, and more.

Social media news: Go social to name Crayola’s newest color

It’s officially back to school season, and millions of children around the world will need essential school supplies. In an effort to boost sales and brand loyalty, Crayola is launching a new marketing campaign to name their latest crayon color—a vibrant blue. Much like the Lay’s “Do Us a Flavor” campaign, the promotion is calling on Crayola fans to vote on their favorite name on their website and Social Media pages for the chance to win Crayola-themed prizes. Along with their fresh promotional campaign, Crayola is also collaborating with beauty brand Sally Hansen to offer crayon-colored nail polish, using the brand’s nostalgia factor to appeal to an older audience.

This campaign proves that outdoor advertising is still eye-catching

Is outdoor advertising a medium of the past? We don’t think so, and neither does the agency Twist Creative. They rolled out an intriguingly ambiguous campaign featuring billboards with simple words or phrases—like butter, orange juice, and paper towels—in a fresh, bold font set against a landscape background. Underneath the words was the URL for the agency’s website. The highly cryptic ads worked—people took note of the mysterious ads and visited the website or contacted the agency on social media to find out what in the world the billboards were all about. As it turns out, the billboards were more of an experiment than a strategy-driven campaign. The outcome of the experiment is simple: you don’t need to say a lot to start a conversation. Clever phrases and a colorful, clean design are effective techniques to catch the eye of your audience. We use this technique in many of our award-winning outdoor advertisements for clients, which you can find around the Dayton area.
