The Immortality of Ideas

"Remembering that you are going to die is the best way I know to avoid the trap of Thinking you have something to lose - Steve Jobs"

I had Argued in Business school that Apple needed a leadership Succession Plan. Too much was riding on the charisma and the marketing whiz of Steve Jobs.

Now is a good time to realize that I argued a moot point. Apple did have a Succession plan. Only Steve Jobs did not...Apple is fine will be.for a while. Too much has gone into the brand for Apple as a company to get effected by the passing of Steve Jobs. Jobs has blessed the company with a strong past and a stronger outlook - of customer centric innovation of cutting edge "hip" products that increases the owners "esteem" needs. (Maslow's words, not mine). Fanboys and brand enthusiasts over the world may be devastated. Industry leaders and country heads are right in being deeply saddened. Innovators are justified celebrating his work and passion.

However, if I read the sub text of what Jobs himself has said, in the now made famous Stanford address in 2005, IDEAS ARE IMMORTAL. People may come and will most definitely go, but their ideas live on forever. Let us nurture and revere the spirit of innovation that this man fostered in all of us. By introducing us to, and teaching us to expect, what we did not even know we needed.

"Your time is limited, so don't waste it living someone else's life. Don't be trapped by dogma — which is living with the results of other people's thinking. Don't let the noise of others' opinions drown out your own inner voice. And most important, have the courage to follow your heart and intuition. They somehow already know what you truly want to become. Everything else is secondary."
