New penalty for using a phone while driving

Police across the UK are cracking down on drivers who use mobile phones at the wheel with the introduction of new rules which will double the minimum fine to £200 and increase the amount of penalty points from three to six.

The new rules will come into effect in March.

It is believed that one in four accidents are caused by drivers using their phones at the wheel which is why tougher sanctions are being introduced.

Inspector Matt Butler, from the Alliance Roads Policing department, said:

"It has been illegal to use a hand-held phone or similar device while driving or riding a motorcycle since December 2003. However, many motorists still fail to see that it is not possible to use a phone and be in proper control of a vehicle.

"Whatever the reason for using a mobile device when driving – texting, scanning a newsfeed or streaming video content – it can wait until your journey is over. Nothing is more important than your safety and the safety of road users around you."

The new rules would see motorists banned from driving if they are caught on the phone while driving twice as they will have accumulated 12 points on their license.

New drivers will also be at risk of receiving a driving ban if they are caught once, as six points may result in having their licenses revoked.
