Dark Phoenix

Last Sunday my husband and I went to see “Dark Phoenix”.

Other than the two “Deadpool” movies I have seen all of the X-Men movies since they began nineteen years ago. Other than “The Wolverine” I have liked all of them. I didn’t want to miss out on the last X-Men Movie made my Fox no matter how bad the buzz was (I have not faith in Disney not destroying it when they starting churning them out.). In fact, all the negative buzz only made me want to see the movie more. I wanted to see if it really was that bad.

The movie isn’t bad at all. It’s not the best X-Men movie but it is perfectly entertaining. Of all the superhero stuff that has come out since the year 2000 the X-Men franchise is the one I have been the most devoted to. I’m not sure why because I never red the comics or watched the cartoons. I think it’s because there is something about the social messaging in the X-Men movies that I found powerful.

“Dark Phoenix” had the unfortunate timing of coming out just weeks after the end of “Game of Thrones”. The reason I mention this is because of the similar storylines. Both Jean Grey and Daenerys Targaryn are very powerful women who take a turn for the dark. Considering how horribly the end of “Game of Thrones” was handled in regard to Daenerys I think the similarities worked against “Dark Phoenix” quite significantly. I would imagine that before the final season of “Game of Thrones” aired everybody associated with “Dark Phoenix” figured the two projects would make a good pair. Unfortunately, I think the bad taste from “Game of Thrones” was still bitter in people’s mouths. This association wasn’t just because of similar storylines, it was because of Sophie Turner.

In a different world where “Game of Thornes” ended on a high note and “Dark Phoenix” was more successful Sophie Turner would be a biggest female star since Jennifer Lawrence but as it is, I think that one of Sophie’s projects was partially sunk by another one of her projects and it could affect her career moving forward.

Like I mentioned I enjoyed “Dark Phoenix”. The ending battle sequence was a little boring to me but that is not uncommon when it comes to me and any kind of action film. I think that the story made enough sense to make an entertaining movie. I can’t help but wonder if “Dark Phoenix” has a bad reputation simply because people read that it is bad. What was so awful about this film that I missed? I actually thought that the film touched on the dark side of more characters than just Jean. I liked this because nobody is all good or all bad.

For an superhero movie the acting was good. Sophie Turner did a good job of showing the internal conflict of Jean Grey/Dark Phoenix. I think that despite the rumors that they didn’t want to do another X-Men movie the acting from Jennifer Lawrence, James McAvoy and Michael Fassbender was also solid.

I’ve always liked the character of Storm and I once again wish she had been given more to do but Alexandra Shipp does a good job with what she has.

My one big issue with the film is Jessica Chastain. Not only is her talent wasted but her performance is pretty lifeless (not to mention that horrible wig).

I would imagine that anybody who is interested in seeing “Dark Phoenix” has already seen it but if you haven’t, I do think it’s worth checking out. It is definitely better than its reputation.
