Ocean’s 8

A couple of weeks ago I went to see “Ocean’s 8” with a lifelong friend and her mom while visiting them in Colorado.

I had not seen an Ocean’s movie since 2001’s “Ocean’s 11”. Although I really enjoyed that Film I didn’t ever really have much interest in seeing the subsequent sequels. I wasn’t that big on seeing “Ocean’s 8” either but when my friend and I were talking about which movie we should see it came up as an option and I figured why not. I was very pleasantly surprised with how much I liked the film.

I’m not the biggest fan of heist films but “Oceans 8” was a lot of fun. It was like a giant puzzle and it was blast watching all the puzzle pieces fall into place.

In terms of the cast I thought the idea of Sandra Bullock playing the sister of George Clooney’s character was kind of lame, but it really worked. Sandra Bullock is such a gifted and natural comedic actress and it was really a pleasure to see her shine in her role in this film.

Cate Blanchett proves to be the mistress of all genres. Her role here is different than anything I have ever seen her do before and she is very effective. Although Helena Bonham Carter is playing another weirdo it is delightful to see how her special brand of weirdness fits in with the characters created by the rest of the cast. I enjoyed Sarah Paulson as the bored housewife who comes back to life when she gets to participate in a big con job. I was also surprised by Rihanna and how good she was, not to mention good supporting roles from Mindy Kaling and Awkwafina. As good as all the above actresses are my favorite performance (by far) was from Anne Hathaway.

She has spent so much of the last decade showing all of us what a good dramatic actress she is, and winning and Oscar along that way, that I forgot what a great comedic actress she is. I really felt that she stole every scene she was in and that is saying a lot given this cast.

I was okay with the cameos from the other Oceans films, but I hated the cameos from the celebrities at the Met Gala (especially Serena Williams).

Given how disappointed I was with “The Incredibles 2” and “Hereditary” it was a relief to be enjoy “Ocean’s 8” so much. I recommend it for anybody who has any interest and hasn’t seen it yet.
