How I Stay Active While On My Period

Being active is a huge part of my lifestyle, but I would be lying if I said I enjoyed working out for one week out of the month. You know the week I’m talking about…the dreaded cramps and the urge to curl up in your bed and sleep instead of going to a workout. Anything that makes having my Period easier is a game changer for me and throughout the years, I’ve tried various products, including the Divacup which has been revolutionary for me. Instead of wondering how other women are happily running and lifting weights while on their period, I am that woman now.

When I first started using the DivaCup several years ago, I was beyond intimidated. I was pretty sure it was going to be a total fail for me and here we are six years later! 91 percent of women who try the DivaCup won’t go back to traditional tampons or pads. My initial reason for trying out the DivaCup was to find a solution to constantly changing out my menstrual care products every several hours. I wanted something that was simple, easy, leak-proof, and safe. I also wanted something that would be completely leak-proof and undetectable so I could still exercise and not be worried about the possible disasters that could happen.

There are two sizes of the DivaCup. I am over 30 years old, but I have never delivered a baby and I find that this size works best for me personally. It is really important to read the User Guide before trying the cup and to consult with your healthcare provider if you have any questions or concerns.

Prior to your first use, you simply boil the DivaCup in an open pot of water for 5-10 minutes. Once inserted, you have 12 hour leak-free protection. 12 whole hours! If you’re active and have a busy lifestyle, this makes having your period a breeze. The less I have to think about it, the better. It is made from 100% healthcare grade silicone and has no added chemicals, plastic, BPA, latex, or dyes, Also, it’s super eco-friendly because you have no more waste to throw out. Being health conscious, I have felt so much better in the last several years using something that I know has no chemicals in it.

I also love that it’s reusable for an entire year. Did you know the average woman spends $150 per year on menstrual care? The DivaCup is $39.99 per year, which means more gym clothes and sneakers for me!

I love how discreet it is and how I can toss it right into my gym bag or purse ahead of my period. If you track your period, you can even insert it ahead of time on the day you’re expecting to get it!

I feel like talking about periods and menstrual care has become much more open in recent years, which is how it should be! It’s a sisterhood of sharing tips, tricks, and ways to make that time of the month just a little bit less stressful. DivaCup is something I tell my friends about and it usually starts with all kinds of questions about whether or not I can feel it (I can’t), if it’s a pain to insert (you get the hang of it), and if it’s gross (not any more than tampons or pads). I encourage every woman to #TryTheDivaCup because I really think you won’t go back to traditional tampons and pads once you do!
