Interview: Tasher

Today, I am interviewing Tasher, a self-help author and entrepreneur.

What was your childhood like?

Tasher: I was born in Flint, Michigan to Mary and Houston Asher.

I have one older brother named C. Robert Asher.

We lived on a farm in Linden, Michigan until I was in middle school.

We then moved to the suburbs.

Mom worked for Chevrolet and dad worked in Buick City.

In your Amazon.com bio you mention that you’ve suffered from dyslexia. What was that like?

Tasher: I suffered from undiagnosed dyslexia until my high school teacher recognized the symptoms.

She taught me how to use various strategies and techniques along with technical aids.

Within a short time, she taught me how it really was a gift that I just needed to learn to control.

Thereafter, my grades improved and I graduated Ainsworth high school with a scholarship.

I, then, attended Northwood University in Midland, Michigan and graduated within four years with three degrees.

Upon graduation, I was hired by General Motors.

I really don’t look at dyslexia as a challenge, but rather as a gift.

What influenced your interest in writing?

Tasher: Writing was something everyone had told me I couldn’t do, especially my ex.

So, after my divorce, and with the encouragement of friends, family and my divorce attorney, I decided it was time to give it a try.

What inspired you to write the Divorced and Scared No More series and start the website?

Tasher: I married my ex-husband on January 14, 1984 in Columbus, Mississippi and we had three children.

At one point we relocated from Columbus, Mississippi to San Antonio, Texas.

I decided to quit my job as a district manager at General Motors and become a stay at home mom.

After 26 years of marriage, we divorced and I moved to Houston where I launched a website and became a frequent contributor to various online magazines.

Along with my co-author, Tony Haynes, I’ve published the three book series ‘Divorced and Scared No More’.

A therapist, Justin Nutt, LSCSW, LAC, also contributed acting as a technical advisor.

The main objective of the series is to help people deal with divorce.

How did you come up with the title?

Tasher: The book series is a continuation of the website by the same name.

I’ve created the website as a means to help people understand that there is no reason to feel scared after divorce.

It is the time to make your life yours and do what you want.

Create a life where you are in control and if you need help look to your higher power to forge the new life you will enjoy.

How did you come up with the logo?

Tasher: The logo for the website and books is a broken set of pilot wings.

My ex-husband was a pilot and when they get their first set of wings in the USAF they break them in half and give one half to someone they love and the other half is thrown away.

The point is that those wings will never come together again.

Just like our marriage after the divorce.

What do you like to do when you’re not writing?

Tasher: My daughter and two grandchildren live in the Houston area as well.

My family is my world and I try spending as much time with them as possible.

What tips or words of encouragement do you have for other writers?

Tasher: No matter what your challenge is, stick with your passion.

Do not listen to others that say you can’t.

If they say that to you, think to yourself: “Wanna bet?”

You can do anything you want to do. Be prepared to work a little harder or find tools that can help you.
