I’ve always loved seeing ladies wearing tuxedos on the red carpet. But recently they’re getting more and more daring. It seems like almost everyone is deciding to leave their tops at home!

Part of me likes the trend, especially on celebrities like Kerry Washington and Anna Kendrick, who both kept their blazers closed. I think keeping your jacket wide open like Kim Kardashian and Demi Lovato is too much—not to mention too risky! I’m sure they used double-stick tape, but still, I’d be so nervous!

The other night, I decided to see if the trend worked in real life. I used my new $32 blazer, which happened to match my old wide leg pants. I hate going sans bra, so I put on a plunging bralette. Instead of leaving my jacket buttoned, I belted it. Belting your blazer helps keep it more secure. Plus it shows off your waist. You just have to make sure your blazer is a bit oversize if you want it to wrap around like mine.

When I arrived at the Shiseido event I felt confident in my take on the Shirtless Tuxedo trend… until I sat down to dinner. I realized I had to keep perfect posture to avoid my jacket from opening. Luckily, it was all ladies around me. Jamie Chung was even rocking a similar look, belting her blazer over a tulle skirt. We joked to keep an eye out for each other’s bras.

So what’s my verdict on the shirtless tuxedo trend? It’s a sometimes do. It’s definitely better for cocktail parties where there is more standing and less sitting. And it needs a belt unless you have a stylist on hand for constant boob watch.
