Remembering Aretha Franklin 1942 - 2018


Singer-songwriter Aretha Franklin, who died Thursday at age 76, sold over 75 million records and won 18 Grammy Awards during her long career as the "Queen of Soul". She received many honors, including a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame (1979), a 1987 induction into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame (as the first female performer), the Kennedy Center Honors (1994), the National Medal of Arts (1999) and the Presidential Medal of Freedom (2005).

Below I've selected some videos to celebrate Franklin's life and career.

She sang "Lover, Come Back to Me," "Rock-a-Bye Your Baby with a Dixie Melody," "Won't Be Long," "Skylark" and "Evil Gal Blues" on The Steve Allen Show on May 19, 1964.



She sang "The Shoop Shoop Song (It’s In His Kiss)" on Shindig! on July 7, 1965



She sang "(You Make Me Feel Like) A Natural Woman," "Baby I Love You" and "Chain of Fools" and performed "That's Life" with Frankie Valli on The Mike Douglas Show on December 25, 1967.



She sang "I Say a Little Prayer" and "Come Back Baby" and performed a medley with host Sammy Davis Jr. of "What Is Soul?," "Think," "Respect" and "What'd I Say?" on The Hollywood Palace on November 2, 1968 (begins at 33:05).



She and Andy Williams sang "Gentle on My Mind" on The Andy Williams Show on May 4, 1969.




She sang "I Say a Little Prayer" and "It's Not Unusual" and performed a medley with Tom Jones of "Bridge Over Troubled Water," "See Saw" and "Spirit in the Dark" as well as "The Party's Over" on This Is Tom Jones on October 9, 1970.





She and Ray Charles sang "Takes Two to Tango" on The Midnight Special on March 30, 1973.



She was the Mystery Guest on What's My Line? on September 9, 1974 (begins at 12:17).



She sang "MacArthur Park" on the NBC special, Bob Hope on Campus, on April 17, 1975.



She sang "Rock With Me," "Shiny Stockings," "Mood Indigo," "Perdido" and "God Bless America" at Jimmy Carter's Inaugural Gala on January 19, 1977.






She sang "You Light Up My Life" at the Royal Jubilee Auditorium in Edmonton, Alberta, Canada, on February 14, 1978.



She sang "Almighty Fire (Woman of the Future)" and "Keep On Loving You" on American Bandstand on February 18, 1978.



As diner waitress Mrs. Murphy, she sang her 1968 hit, "Think", in the 1980 film, The Blues Brothers.



She performed "Respect" on the Jerry Lewis MDA Labor Day Telethon in 1980.



Her music video for "Freeway of Love", which reached #3 on Billboard's Hot 100 chart in the summer of 1985 and earned her a Grammy for Best Female R&B Vocal Performance



Her 1985 music video for "Sisters Are Doin' It for Themselves", a duet with Eurythmics that reached #18 on Billboard's Hot 100 chart.



Her music video for "Jimmy Lee", which reached #28 on Billboard's Hot 100 chart in early 1987.



Her music video for "I Knew You Were Waiting (For Me)", a duet with George Michael that reached #1 on Billboard's Hot 100 chart in April 1987 and earned her a Grammy for Best R&B Performance by a Duo or Group with Vocals.



She performed "I Want to Be Happy" and "(You Make Me Feel Like) A Natural Woman" on the Jerry Lewis MDA Labor Day Telethon on September 1, 1990.



She was interviewed by Ed Bradley on 60 Minutes in 1990.



Her music video for "Everyday People" from her 1991 album, What You See Is What You Sweat.



She appeared as herself on "The Queen of Soul" episode of Murphy Brown on November 11, 1991.



She sang "I Dreamed a Dream" at Bill Clinton's Inaugural Gala on January 19, 1993.



She performed "The Star-Spangled Banner" before Game 1 of the World Series on October 16, 1993.



She was a guest on Late Show with David Letterman five times - March 14, 1994 (songs: "A Deeper Love," "Think"), September 7, 1994 ("Honey"), February 25, 1998 ("A Rose Is Still a Rose"), May 18, 1999 ("Nessun Dorma") and September 29, 2014 ("Rolling in the Deep/Ain't No Mountain High Enough").



She and Lou Rawls performed on In Performance at the White House on June 20, 1994.



She was a guest on Oprah in 1999 and sang a medley of songs honoring her father (including "Hush, Hush Sweet Charlotte" and "Shotgun") as well as "We Need Power."



She sang "My Country, 'Tis of Thee" at President Barack Obama's 2009 inaugural ceremony.



She sang "I Never Loved A Man (The Way I Love You)" and "Amazing Grace" on In Performance at the White House: Women of Soul on March 6, 2014.




She sang "(You Make Me Feel Like) A Natural Woman" on the Kennedy Center Honors, which aired on December 29, 2015.
