Bucks County, PA is a fantastic place to visit any time of year. Located in Southeastern Pennsylvania along the Delaware River it is the perfect stop while visiting near by Philadelphia. It is also a great stop if you are traveling along Interstate 95 heading to New York or down to Washington DC.
There are so many wonderful things to see and do in Bucks County. You can visit a one of a kind theme Park called Sesame Place (read review here). See where General George Washington Crossed the Delaware back in 1776. Do a covered bridge tour. Or even do some rock climbing.
Today we are going to take a deep dive into the many State Parks that Bucks County has to offer. There are a total of 5 State Parks in Bucks County. You have Delaware Canal State Park, Neshaminy State Park, Nockamixon State Park, Ralph Stover State Park, and Tyler State Park.
I will be doing an in-depth review on all 5 state parks in the coming months. But for today I want to give a little over view on all 5 and show you what they have to offer. Exploring Bucks County, PA State Parks is always a good idea. Besides who doesn’t like going out and getting fresh air?
Delaware Canal State Park
Delaware Canal State Park covers many miles. 60 miles to be exact. It starts up in Easton, PA Northampton County and follows the Delaware River all the way to Bristol, PA Bucks County. It is a long park but not very wide.
One popular activity at this state park is hiking and biking along the canal. There are a few different rest areas in place with clean bathrooms when they are opened. They are usually opened spring, summer, and fall and closed during the winter.
Certain areas of the canal are also stocked with trout during trout season (Opens early April). This makes it an excellent place to do a little fishing. You may also see some kayakers’ paddling up and down the canal.
Neshaminy State Park
Neshaminy State Park is located along the Delaware River in Bensalem Township. It is very close to the Philadelphia county line. This park offers many paved hiking trails, a playground and a pool.
The big highlight of this park is the ability to see the Philadelphia Skyline from the banks of the Delaware River. While you are there cast a line out into the river while enjoying the Philly Skyline. Or just sit on one of the many benches that look onto the skyline.
During the summer months you can take a dip in the pool. It is a large pool with slides and other activities. Or enjoy many of the shaded picnic areas with bbq grills.
Nockamixon State Park
Nockamixon State Park is located in Upper Bucks County. It is a popular park for boating, fishing and hunting. The big draw here is of course the Lake.
The lake is 1,450 and a great place to take a boat or kayak. You can even spend the night in one of 10 cabins. A few of the cabins even allow dogs. They are modern cabins and depending on which one your rent sleep 6 or 8 people.
As with any PA State Park they offer many hiking trails. Most of the trials are of moderate difficulty. Some of these trials offer spectacular views of Lake Nockamixon.
Ralph Stover State Park
If rock climbing is your thing, a visit to Ralph Stover State Park is a must. There is an area called High Rocks that offer rocking climbing areas. DO NOT ATTEMPT if you are not an experienced climber.
There are some trials leading down the the Tohickon Creek that allow some amazing views of the cliffs. From the top you are greeted with a stunning view of the surrounding area.
The trials leading from the High Rocks parking lot down to the creek can be very difficult. This is really a place for younger kids like the other four State Parks. If you bring younger kids here, kept a good eye on them since there are some pretty decent drops and big sloops.
Tyler State Park
Tyler State Park is the last State Park in Bucks County. Tyler State Park is known locally for the Disc Golf Course and Horse riding trails. There are also numerous hiking and biking trails as well.
On the one end of the park there is a covered bridge. It is closed to vehicle traffic but open for people, bikes and horses. There are about 25 total miles of trails to hike at Tyler State Park.
Here you can also rent a canoe at the boat house and take it on the Neshaminy Creek. If you are a avid disc golfer, try your hand at the parks 36 hole course. It is one of the top ranked courses in the country.
Spending a day in the State Parks of Bucks County, PA can take you many places. From seeing the beautiful Philadelphia Skyline than to hang out on some cliffs feeling like Stallone. It could easily take you two days just to explore these five parks.
