William Shakespeare Biography and Famous Quotes
William Shakespeare is widely considered to be one of the greatest poets, playwrights and dramatists of all time. He has often been called England’s national poet. Born April 26, 1564 and died April 23, 1616, Shakespeare wrote about comedy, life and love in his many poems and plays.

William Shakespeare — 1564 – 1616

Shakespeare’s work is known throughout the world. His works, including collaborations, consist of approximately 38 plays, 154 sonnets, two long narrative poems and a few other verses. His plays have been translated into every major living language and are performed more often than those of any other playwright.

Shakespeare was born and raised in Stratford-upon-Avon, Warwickshire. At the age of 18, he married Anne Hathaway, and together they had three children: Susanna and twins Hamnet and Judith. Sometime around 1585 to 1592, he embarked on a successful career in London as an actor, writer, and part-owner of a playing company knows as the Lord Chamberlain’s Men, which later became known as the King’s Men.

Most of Shakespeare’s work was produced between 1589 and 1613. His early plays were primarily comedies and histories, and are regarded as some of the best work ever produced in these fields. He then wrote mainly tragedies until about 1608, including Hamlet, Othello, King Lear and Macbeth, and these works are widely considered some of the finest plays in the English language. At around the year 1613, Shakespeare appears to have retired to Stratford, where he died three years later.

Shakespeare’s works have been repeatedly adapted and rediscovered by movements throughout the world. His plays remain highly popular and are constantly studied, performed and reinterpreted in diverse cultural and political settings the world over.
