RESPECT IS NOT ALWAYS EARNED, ITS A RIGHT!

I really should start respecting the feelings of my dear readers by sticking to consistency, even though I'd rather have something tangible to offer than just drop any kind of junk here for you.  And I know that the more respect I show to my AGJ readers, the more respect they'll have for my blog, it's content and every other thing associated with it (and that includes me...."giggles"). After all, it's said that "respect is reciprocal".

Long time no post! Hope you've been doing great for yourself and all of us........*winks*. If it's your first time here, then you must know that I Love you from the bottom pot of my heart even though you can't see me right now yet the love is immense. Talking about respect!

Honestly, I really think that respect is overrated. "You heard me". As Africans, especially Nigerians, we place
too much emphasis on it and this has made it to become misunderstood, abused and overrated (Had to repeat it for the second time). RESPECT IS NOT ALWAYS RECIPROCAL. IT ISN'T ALWAYS EARNED BUT MUST STILL BE GIVEN!

I'm sure you're already wondering what point I'm trying to make whilst sounding whichever way this might have sounded to you. Yet I'd like to point out what respect is, first.

The Urban Dictionary says respect means treating people in a positive manner that acknowledges them for who they are. Put an emphasis on "positive manner". You don't have to be negative or depict a negative character/emotion because someone else is not being positive. As a matter of fact, you owe it to your peace of mind to stay positive no matter how a person or situation is.

Respect comes in phases. It is gotten in two ways:

👉 Earned as a result of one's personality or character trait
👉 Gotten as a result of one's position or status.

See, no matter the level of disdain or hatred you have for a person, you'll still have to and must respect him or her as a result of his social status or position (usually, of authority).

For instance, you hate this particular Pastor in your local assembly so much that even the mention of his name makes you want to puke yet you HAVE TO give him his respect as a spiritual authority over you as long as that church is concerned. You can murmur and cringe and curse all you want whilst you're alone but you'll still keep respecting him. Another example would have to be meetings; could be village, church, alumni or any other type of Meeting, as long as it is structured or has executive members. There is always going to be someone you don't like, whether for tangible of intangible reasons, as long as a gathering is concerned. Let's say, it's the president or any other executive member of the meeting. They might even have obvious bad attitudes yet must still respect him/her regardless.

Are you getting my point yet?
My point here is: these set of people don't have to beg for your respect. They are entitled to it. It's their right as long as that arm of authority been given to them. Not trying to sound too harsh but it'll either be that you accord them that right or leave the meeting or association. After all, since respect is reciprocal, you have to give it to those above you in order to receive it when you get to a position of authority yourself, no matter how small it might seem. It also go a long way to show who you truly are.

It also doesn't matter if you're years, degrees or intellectually older than them.

We must come to this realization that people don't have to be exactly what we expect of them. They're humans too and are different from the rest of us just as you are. It's you who has to work on yourself well enough to know how to manage and react to different personalities. Work on being positive. Love always wins in the end p, by the way.

So let's start loving more, ignoring most (negative emotions) and helping to build ourselves for the sake of ourselves and the generations yet to come.

How would you react to this scenario?:
You're an executive member of an organization. In one of your meetings, a subordinate walks into your caucus meeting and throws a piece of paper to your face saying "you must write it yourself"?
