Generation Z or Gen Z, just like the Millennial, are often criticized by many just because they mostly spend their time on gadgets and social media, while older generations like me would always remind them and talk about the days without cell phones, yet we survived. Most of the time, I don’t understand them, but that doesn’t mean that I cannot keep up with them. If I have to be with them on Snapchat or say have a short appearance on their Musical.ly, I would. I must admit, too, that even though my job includes digital marketing, there are things that I no longer understand and able to do – like video editing. That’s when I turn to them. They teach me. I also learn many things from them and not always the other way around. Let’s admit it, they are the empowered Generation of today’s digital age. At times, too, they would insist that we sing along, record it, so they can upload on their YouTube channels. But the thing is I no longer know the songs that they like so I have no choice but to learn them. Many times, you will only hear one song playing again and again for one whole day. Irritating it may sound to me, but I have to keep up with them, and just think about the old days when I used to do the same thing and my mom would also side-comment on it. Just this week, we recorded a song titled Bakit Ba Ikaw by Michael Pangilinan. I had to give in one condition, that they will also sing along with me singing my choice of song. Their goals and interests may not align with ours, but that’s okay. Let them be. Give them the freedom that they want for as long as you constantly remind them of their limitations, the same way how we were raised by our parents. If there’s one thing that I would like to hold on to is the thought that they are doing their best to prove their worth in today’s modern age.
