Alegria Playa Sandals

This review of the Alegria Playa sandals is sponsored by Alegria Shoe Shop. The opinions are completely my own based on experience.

My first pair of Alegria sandals carried my achy feet through three summers before ending up in the donation bin–still in very good condition as Alegria makes durable footwear from high quality materials.  I’ve worn Birkenstock, Naot and Vionic since then, but this summer I’m up for something new. Knowing I need a back strap to keep the sandal secure (discussed in this article), I started my search. The Alegria Playa sandals popped up in my Pinterest feed and I knew it was exactly what I was looking for: two adjustable straps, a simple go-with-everything style, and Alegria’s trademark contoured footbed with heel cup and arch support. What I wasn’t sure about was the outsole. The Playa sandal features a new-to-the-scene Alegria outsole: thick polyurethane platform with flex grooves. Would the sole be too flexible and aggravate my arthritic big toe (hallux limitus)?

I wouldn’t wonder for long. I strapped on my new Alegria sandals to serve as a volunteer at my son’s school for “Explore More Day.” My assignment? The Shakes and Smoothies room…all day…on hard tile floors. I was too busy measuring, pouring, blending, and corralling 95 second to fifth graders through their stations to even give much though to my feet. But what I did note was the absolute comfort of that thick polyurethane outsole. It felt like I had five small yoga mats stacked up beneath my feet. My sensitive soles didn’t detect the cold hard tile floor beneath them thanks to the incredible shock-absorbing sole of the Alegria Playa.

The footbed is just as supportive as other Alegria sandals (and shoes) I’ve worn with a deep heel cup and excellent arch support. The back strap keeps the sandal strapped securely to my foot lessening toe gripping (which makes hammertoes worse). I also was pleasantly surprised that the outsole didn’t flex too much at the forefront–no irritation to my big toe.

An added benefit is the Playa’s water-resistant leather upper. Spill a little smoothie? Just wipe it off–no stain left, just shiny, smooth leather. Wear them through the sprinkler this summer and they’ll dry off as good as new.

Once again, Alegria sandals bring happiness to my moody feet!

I’d recommend the Alegria Playa for medium to wide feet (as the two adjustable straps offer a customized fit). Available in five colors, sizes 35-42 (I take the 41 for my size 10 feet) from AlegriaShoeShop.com with free shipping and returns. Be sure to shop the close-out department at AlegriaShoeShop.com where you can find last season’s styles for $59-69!

You can also find the Alegria Playa at Zappos, 6pm.com, Amazon and Nordstrom, Since writing this post, a new Alegria sandal has hit the scene and it’s very similar to the Playa–meet the Anah!
