How to Manage Your Academic Stress

As we quickly approach Advanced Placement (AP), International Baccalaureate® (IB), and a vast list of more college preparatory tests, applications, or Study Abroad programs, Stress can become the greatest adversary.

“What is my score going to be?”

“What school will accept me?”

“How will my GPA be affected?”

“How will I make friends traveling?”

“What will I do after high school?”

Just…BREATHE! It is perfectly normal to find yourself in a place where you are concerned with your future. But, it is imperative that you’re able to take your stress and show it who’s boss!

Put Things in Their Proper Place

Everything has an order of importance. Begin to organize what needs to be done by the order of their deadlines. It is harder to try and juggle everything, altogether, so this will help you to arrange your needs sequentially. Your optimal academic success can be gained through proper time management and prioritization.

  • Set realistic deadlines & goals.
  • Write them down.
  • Cross them out, as you accomplish each.

Increase your activity!

This is not a suggestion to sign up for the next Triathlon, as this can be challenging. However, research shows that regular exercise helps memory and brain function. Staying active can also improve your mood, decrease stress levels, and anxiety. You don’t have to become a new guru of exercise but you can:

  • Take a walk around your neighborhood.
  • Go for a swim.
  • Take a free Youtube yoga class.
  • Run on a treadmill before doing homework.

The list is endless! Don’t hesitate to include your friends and make it a group activity. Just stay moving and stay positive!

Ask for help!

Sometimes you want to show just how much you can do, on your own, and that’s noble. However, it is important that when you’re having doubts or uncertainties that you ask and talk to people who have been where you are, where you’re trying to go and can provide you with the tools you need.

  • Find a tutor if you’re struggling in a subject.
  • Talk to your counselor about college stuff.
  • Ask your parents/siblings for homework help
  • Use the summer holidays to travel and prepare for your tests

Remove the idea of perfectionism!

Perfectionism is the notion that everything you do has to be perfect, all the time. It is great to have goals and want to exceed your personal best, but it is also unhealthy to work yourself into the ground without coming up for air. Perfectionism can make you feel more stressed and anxious due to the fear of failure. Once you realize that you are great, be confident in being proud of yourself, even when you may not get the results that you may desire.
