The Skinny was on Diet

I remember when I was in 10th grade, senior high school. I suddenly became sensitive of my weight. I suddenly felt fat all the time. I went on a Diet of course, and when I lost many kilos I continued dieting because the 'very skinny' look made me feel good.

Like many other girls, I ended up having yo-yo effect. Most probably because I didn't do any exercise with my diet. So, I struggled with body weight issue for several years before I encountered effective method to keep the kilos away without suffering, that is, exercise and diet combination.

Looking back, I was so lucky that I didn't end up with eating disorder such as anorexia or bulimia. I learned that the two disorders are very common in girls concerned with their body shape.

I'm a mother of two gorgeous daughters. What a surprise (or not..) that they went through the same problem though with different levels. My first daughter, Zanira, was in junior high when she realized that she was chubby. So she decided to take action. She ate fruits for breakfast and another serving at night. She also reduced snacks a lot. It worked well. No fuss.

My second daughter, Firda, however, was a bit more serious. As soon as she started senior high, she decided that she was 'too fat'. She changed her eating habit into a very healthy one. So healthy that it worried me. Lots of fruits and vegetables (mostly cucumber and steamed broccoli as I'm not a good cook), whole wheat bread, boiled eggs and plenty of water. No junk food, sugar, and processed food.

Of course, in no time, she became very skinny, yet, she still felt she wasn't skinny enough. She continued her strict eating pattern and it worried me that it would lead her to something dangerous... eating disorder.

Thank God, she didn't. As time passed by, somehow she realized what she was doing was tiresome and stupid. Slowly she reduced the fruit portions, water intake, and started to enjoy different types of food, until now. The diet frenzy lasted less than a year.

Firda's instagram account is in my phone. Either she forgot to log out when she borrowed my phone or it didn't matter to her that I can always check her instagram, which is a mother's dream..LOL.

I check her stories everyday. Hanging out with her friends and doing silly things at school dominate the stories. Until yesterday, I saw different story. She wrote something about her feeling with body image. I retype what she wrote, no editing:

"When people that 'look skinny' go on diets, it's not your place to tell them that they shouldn't. It's also disrespectful to say that they're only doing it 'for attention' because you can never see what they see.
They're insecure about how they look, and sure it's a nice thing to tell them to take care of themselves and to tell them that they are beautiful already, but when you start assuming things about the reason they're doing it, it makes them anxious.
I have done this in my live, I was really immature and I regret that. People could have eating disorders and your words could really affect their mental state so let's not assume things about other people.
When someone is insecure about themselves, the right thing to do is try to lift them up by reassuring them or giving them kind words, and also give advice to always stay safe/healthy, not bring them down by calling them an Attention Seeker because that's really messed up."

Her notes surprise me. I didn't know she could be wise in a way. And she wrote it in English.. *english_teacher_mode_on

I'm relieved I didn't comment too much about her diet. I did remind her about eating disorder and keep telling her to be healthy. But, yes, I told her that she shouldn't go on diet as she was slim already. Did any of her friends call her an attention seeker? Maybe..

Bringing up children is the hardest job, yet, there's so much to learn in the process.
