Setting up my bank account

As a general rule, we are only allowed to apply for a Bank account here in Norway if you have a person number – NNIN Norwegian National ID Number.

We use this number to identify ourselves to the public authorities and to open a Norwegian Bank Account. People residing in Norway are given a national ID number. While foreigners who intend to stay in Norway for less than six months will be given a D Number. What’s a D Number?  Foreigners who come to work in Norway for less than six months will not be given a national ID number. Instead, they are assigned a D Number.

  1. Where did I get my NNIN?

If you are under the Family Reunification or Skilled Worker Visa, you must go to Skatteetaten – Tax Office within 7 seven days upon your arrival here.

a. Report your move to Norway

b. Apply for your tax deduction card

Wait for 2-3 weeks and you will receive a mail from them with your registry with NNIN.

2. Once you receive your NNIN you can already go to your preferred bank.

You can play around here at finansportalen to see and compare the different rates for personal account.

3. Take note, NONE of those 3 banks above IS my bank of choice. LOL It’s up to you to ask, research or consult your Norwegian family or friends.

When I was opening a bank account, they specifically asked for my D Number and of course my NNIN. They also asked for my passport for legitimation/identification purposes. Bank ID form. I never had any problem with the interview because they speak english when they interviewed me for setting up my bank account. Filling out 8-10 forms and in less than 20 minutes, I received a copy of my bank agreement, my first Norwegian bank account! Yipeeee! After 2 business days, I received my BankID and I was able to log in my netbank, downloaded the my bank’s mobile app in iOs and Google Play.

4. My cards arrived after 5 business days! Contactless payment works too everytime I shop less than 200kr depending on the shops that supports it! I also connected my card to VIPPS so I can easily pay or transfer money! Happy shopping!

With a Norwegian bank account you’re ready to securely receive payments, salary, pay online and access government based services via BankID.
