A SAD THOUGHT ON ST. STEPHEN’S COLLEGE

A SAD THOUGHT ON ST. STEPHEN’S COLLEGE

Valson Thampu

One of the reasons why some of the teachers in St. Stephen’s College, oppose autonomy is that they fear PG courses might be introduced. Many of them are simply not qualified or competent to teach at this level. The activists are mostly MAs! Now they won’t qualify for a teaching job even in schools. The worst is that they haven’t grown over decades. The most frustrating part of my tenure was battling the pigheadedness of this entrenched mediocrity. They have no qualms and no sense of shame. They think that a loud mouth and thick skin are all it takes to pass for heroes.

Higher education in India is in shambles not because we don’t have funds. Our greatest curse is substandard teachers who think having to work is an atrocity on them. How long shall we tolerate these parasites?

Until a public outcry is raised against this systematic obstruction of the progress and the future of the country our children, our grandchildren and their children will perish at the hands of these bandicoots.

Please speak up!
