Watch Out for These Green Technologies to Hit Big in 2017

Embracing a Green lifestyle is not just about embracing the equatorial rainforest. It can also mean improving the quality of your life, padding up your bank account, and improving your health.

It’s hard not to notice that green is everywhere these days — and we’re not talking about trees here. It’s in the news, fashion, politics, foods, and technology. It’s all over the Internet, too. Making buzz as conversation starters on different coffee tables. As far as we are concerned, all of them are great. But with millions of ideas and messages coming from all sides, it’s very easy to get waylaid in the quotidian stuff.

Of course, it is inevitable for us humans. We like to follow trends, whether it’s fashion-related, lifestyle, diet, or technology. And Green Technology is no different. Discovery and production of sustainable materials (eco-friendly of course) brought a new facet in the technology industry.

2017 holds a wealth of promising green technology innovations that we need to watch out for. So, take a sneak peek to these fabulous and eco-friendly innovations.

Air purifying roof tiles

Studies show that a thick coating of Titanium Dioxide on roof tiles reduces 97 percent of greenhouse gasses. (Image: Pixabay / CC0)

Roof tiles are coated with titanium dioxide, which helps purify the air. Titanium dioxide functions as a photocatalyst by oxidizing volatile organic compounds and nitrogen oxides into soluble fatty acids and nitrates when exposed to UV light.

Studies show that a thick coating of titanium dioxide on roof tiles reduces 97 percent of greenhouse gasses, while a thinner coating is still efficient and reduces 88 percent. The widespread application of the coating converts a single home into a mini air purifier. Take note that a single house coated with titanium dioxide can eliminate 21 grams of nitrogen oxide per day, which is equivalent to car emissions over 11,184 miles (18,000 kilometers). Now, that’s what we call green power.

Eco-friendly concrete (Eco-concrete)

Yep, concrete can be made eco-friendly too. Eco-concrete is the perfect example of green technology that combines practicality, strength, and air-purification.

It’s designed to filter pollution and smog by converting nitrogen oxide into nitrogenous compounds. It’s proven to reduce nitrogen gases by up to 45 percent in the right weather.

Cool pavement

Researchers from Berkeley are currently studying different approaches on how to maximize the cooling effects of the pavement. (Image: Pixabay / CC0)

Typical dark pavement used for most roads absorbs energy from the sun and heats up the surrounding area. Pavement can reach up to 120-150° F, but cool pavement reduces this temperature by over 40° F.

The researchers from Berkeley are currently studying different approaches on how to maximize the cooling effects of the pavement. Two of the given options are creating a new type of pavement made from reflective or lighter material, and creating a reflective coating for existing pavements.

Energy harvesting concrete

Kemball-Cook, the founder and creator of Pavegen, definitely defies the expectation of many green tech aficionados.

The revolutionary Pavegen is the newest type of energy-harvesting tile that converts energy from footsteps into electricity that can be used or stored directly by devices. Kinetic energy from footsteps may not supply an entire power grid, but it is very efficient in powering street lamps and vending machines. As of now, Pavegen is in the process of becoming commercialized.

Takeaway

There are still people out there who are working feverishly to develop new ideas to save our environment. (Pixabay / CC0)

The world is undeniably feeling the effects of climate change. Food is becoming scarce, weather patterns are changing, storms are getting stronger, and animals are going extinct. Good thing there are still people out there who are working feverishly to develop new ideas to save our environment. Kudos to all green scientists!
