Quand on tombe sur un candidat à la présidentielle américaine, accompagné d'un seul sous-fifre, qui ne lui tient même pas son porte-documents pendant qu'il paie son lunch avant de prendre son avion, on se dit que ses collectes de fonds ne sont pas à la hauteur des espérances et surtout du chemin à parcourir. C'est ce que j'ai pensé tout à l'heure, en tombant sur Bill Richardson, gouverneur du Nouveau-Mexique et accessoirement candidat démocrate à la Maison-Blanche, fouillant ses poches pour payer son paquet de chips Lay et sa limonade Mermaid, à l'aéroport de Columbia, en Caroline du Sud.
Comparé aux trois bulldozers bardés de fils leur sortant des oreilles qui accompagnaient Barack Obama hier en Caroline du Sud, ça m'a conforté dans l'idée que Richardson est dans la course à la vice-présidence. Ses créances en matière de politique étrangère feraient de lui un excellent second pour Obama, voire même pour Hillary Clinton. Les deux Bill, Richardson et Clinton, sont d'ailleurs assez proches. Le second avait nommé le premier ambassadeur à l'ONU avant de lui offrir le Ministère de l'Energie sous son deuxième mandat.
When you bump into a presidential candidate, paying for his lunch in the waiting area of a terminal before taking his plane, that's when you know his finances are in trouble. That's what i thought when i saw Bill Richardson, having to sort his change to buy his pack of Lay Chips and a Mermaid Lemonade at the airport of Columbia, SC.
Compared to the three bodyguards following Barack Obama everywhere he goes, it just convinced me more that Richardson is in the race for VP. I even think he would be a formidable second on a ticket with Obama, thanks to his credentials in foreign affairs, a domain where the young senator of Illinois still seems to struggle. Or just waiting for Hillary to call him in. After all, the two Bill, Richardson and Clinton, have always been close. Richardson served first as the UN ambassador and then as Secretary of Energy under Clinton's presidency.
