Indian Naval Air Squadron 561 was commissioned into the Indian Navy as Helicopter Training School on 15 September 1971 at INS Garuda and was re-based at Arakkonam on 15 June 1992. The Squadron has trained 724 pilots of the Navy and Coast Guard till date and include, two officers from Sri Lanka Navy and one officer from Bangladesh Navy. A centre of excellence for Chetak operations, the squadron undertakes on job training for all technical officers and sailors of Chetak stream. The unit also provides #SAR cover in Chennai region. ‘INAS 561’ has been numbered as per sequential serial number of the Air Squadrons of IN. The crest design is a graphic representation of rotating blades of a helicopter around a Yellow hub against a light Blue background. The blades have been coloured Blue to represent the Navy. The centre is yellow to indicate the training role of the squadron.
