CV Raman Biograpgy- A scientist who won India’s first Nobel Prize

Sir Chandrasekhara Venkata Raman was the first Indian to win the Nobel Peace Prize for Physics. CV Raman made his motherland proud by doing some commendable job in the field of research and was a scientist par excellence. Raman was very bright from his childhood years and passed his matriculation exam at a younger age compared to others. He was exposed to mathematics and physics as his father was the teacher of the subjects and was deeply interested in research. He began his research work on acoustics and optics when he was a student He started his career as a Deputy Accountant General but his curiosity for research made him stay awake every night in discovering new things in the field of Physics. Sir CV Raman was also famous for discovering ‘ Raman effect ’. This was the cv raman discovery for that got him the Nobel Prize.

Early Life & Childhood

Raman was born near a small village in Tiruchirapalli to R. Chandrasekhara Iyer and Parvathi. His father, who started his career as a teacher, became a lecturer in Maths and physics.

He studied in St. Aloysius Anglo-Indian High School at Vishakapatnam. He was a brilliant student and passed his matriculation when he was just 11 years old. At the age of 13 he passes his F.A examination (equivalent to today’s intermediate exam) with a scholarship.

He has done B.A. in Physics from Presidency College in Madras in 1904 andwas a gold medalist. He later earned his MA degree in 1907.

He topped the Financial Service Examination and went to Calcutta in 1907 to join the Indian Finance Department as Assistant Accountant General.

In 117, he got the opportunity to join the University of Calcutta. He joined the university as a Professor of Physics. He resigned from his government job to take up the job as a professor which was underpaid than his previous job.

During 1920’s he experimented with the scattering of light. He observed the behavior of monochromatic light which penetrated transparent objects and fell on a spectrograph. This led to the discover known as ‘Raman Effect’.

He established the Raman Research Institute in Bangalore in 1848 for conducting scientific research in Physics. He continued his research till his death. Sir cv raman inventions are amazing.

Awards & Achievements

Raman was the winner of Nobel Prize in Physics for his contribution on the scattering of light and discovery of ‘Raman Effect’. He was the first Indian to win a Nobel Prize in the field of Science.

Personal Life

Raman was married to Lokasundari and fathered two son Chandrashekhar and Radhakrishnan. He died at the age of 82 and lived a long and productive life.

He was the paternal uncle of another great scientist and Nobel Laureate, Subhramaniyan Chandreshekhar
