.AUDIT File Extension’ Ransomware

The ‘.AUDIT File Extension’ Ransomware is one of the newly identified variants of the Dharma Ransomware, which has shown impressive activity in the past couple of months. The authors of the Dharma project released a large collection of decryption keys for free in 2017, and many older variants of the Dharma Ransomware are decryptable but, unfortunately, the same cannot be said about ‘.AUDIT File Extension’ Ransomware – this newer variant is not compatible with any of the available decryption keys, and its victims would need to resort to using 3rd-party data recovery techniques that may not always work properly.

As the name of this file-encryption Trojan reveals, its attack will leave all locked files with a modified name by the inclusion of the ‘.AUDIT’ extension. For example, the encrypted version of the file ‘archive.zip’ would be renamed to ‘archive.zip.AUDIT.’ Do not forget that the filename has nothing to do with the encryption, and even if you remove the ‘.AUDIT’ extension, the file’s contents will still be inaccessible.

After the ‘.AUDIT File Extension’ Ransomware is done encrypting files on the compromised computer, it may proceed with the last step of its attack – to provide the victim with data recovery instructions. Unfortunately, there are free things in the world of cybercrime rarely, and the authors of the ‘.AUDIT File Extension’ Ransomware ask for a hefty sum of money in exchange for a decryptor. We would not counsel you to send any money to the ‘.AUDIT File Extension’ Ransomware’s authors, since there is no reason to trust that they will fulfill their part of the deal once the transaction is done.

Dealing with ransomware is a difficult task, and it often may be nearly impossible to fully recover from the attack. The only guaranteed way to fully negate the damage done by the ‘.AUDIT File Extension’ Ransomware is to recover your files from a recent data backup but, unfortunately, this is a viable solution rarely since many users do not bother to back-up the contents of their hard drives. The next best thing to do if the ‘.AUDIT File Extension’ Ransomware has locked up your files, and you do not have a backup is to use a trustworthy anti-malware application immediately, which will assist you with the ransomware’s removal. This will not solve the problem with the encrypted files, and your best choice would be to rely on data recovery software that may be able to undo some of the damage.
