Breathing Down Your Competitor's Neck

The Free Dictionary defines Breathing Down (Someone's Neck) as 'To Watch or Monitor Closely'.

Does that sound just right? Well, it should if you have a business and you want to keep ahead of your Competitors. So, how exactly do you do that? Yes, by breathing down their digital necks. It does not sound very good, but its a bad world world out there and chances are that your rivals are already way ahead in tracking your progress than you thought. So, how do you keep up, especially if you are a beginner?

Be Prepared for Hard Work

It is not the most exciting of things to do or rewarding in itself, however, all the information you gather from this rather mundane exercise will give you a definite direction for improvement.

You will need a few accounts on the most common platforms that will allow you to trace backlinks. We think OpenSite Explorer and Majestic SEO have easy and powerful tools to help you get started. How you keep records of your finding is your business, the most common is to use excel sheets (as if you did not already know!)

Now, these links do not change as often, but you cannot keep anything to chance. Best practices of doing this is doing a fresh trace of all your competitors every month or frequently. Then comes the tedious part of converting numbers into graphical data for the benefit of your client! But believe us, your clients (or your boss) will listen what you've got to say if you have figures, numbers and charts to show off!

Reading Between Figures

Are you good with numbers? You better be because no client is going to like you if you dump a huge mess of cryptic numbers in their face! Numbers need to be converted in friendly, lovely images and charts that will endear readers instead of scaring them away. Do you need expensive software to do that? Some hire a separate set of professionals just for that, d-o-o-o-oh!

This is usually very easy. We are a digital agency and we do it with a magical, secret weapon called - MS Excel!

In no time, you will have a nice lists of all links that you can use too. The data can be used to convince reluctant clients in investing in backlinks. A lot of things do change when you have hard facts with you. A skeptic suddenly starts believing in you and playing along with your wishes.

Where to Draw The Line

There is no alternative to working hard and putting in real efforts to succeed. Use these data as pointers, not as benchmarks. You will also need to come up with better link building strategies than your competitors. Do not blindly follow what you discover, in stead devise your own war plan, using these to keep your plans on track.
