Killer Doctors! Or a Bad Case of Reputation Management?

2000, When Internet Was a Geeks-Only Thing!

I woke up one day, back in 2000, with the day's newspaper in hand. Back then, I had no iPad to read the morning news. The first thing that came into view was a headline, typically sensational of print media and ran through half of the front page. It was about an Iranian Doctor doing something ugly with this female patients.

The ordeal was becoming common, sometimes such cases sprang from lack of clear communications between the patient and the doctor, but the recent frequency of such cases were appalling and introduced an unknown fear and doubt in the minds of patients about their own doctors. Even today, female patients are wary of sexual advances made by physicians and they make sure that they avoid such cases.

A few months later, when I was catching up with latest events on the television a few months later, I recognized the face of the doctor that I saw earlier. As I listened intently, I found that the man on my TV screen was indeed a victim of Mistaken Identity and not the original perpetrator who was scott-free until then. All these while the mistaken man tried to reclaim his name and get patients, but to no avail.

Names are often confused with no big harm, but at times such as these, a simple mistake can destroy established man and take them many years to rebuild them back.

2012, Fast Forward Into The Age of Seamless Internet Connectivity and ORM

I cringe at the thought of the potential damages the same case of mistaken identity would have done today when information spreads at the speed of thought. If you are a professional, imagine waking up someday getting a short text message from your friend about an mention of your name somewhere on the internet!

You check the link and find really damning things being said about you, but you do not recognize the context or the participants in the discussion. After you have seen enough, it dawns upon you although the name is similar, it is not you.

It will take sometime for someone to discover the truth, by then the damage would have been done. People will start associating your name with someone you are not and avoid your business. Not only is it embarrassing, it can take your livelihood from you. Before you know, your rivals will make a funny case of your name/brand and spread tidbits like "all people named X are similar!"

Got a Case of Mistaken Identity?

Have you ever combed through the forums and online platforms for your name? It is not necessary that Google should show all information related to your name or brand. You will need something more than that at times to get deeper with your investigation.

This is where Online Reputation Management comes into the game. Professionals have powerful tools, far more capable of finding hidden traces of even the most obscure mention of your name hidden in the deepest recess of the online world. Once found, all that remains is countering negative things and compounding positive mentions.

Your Reputation is Valuable Than Gold!

Despite what it sounds, online Reputation Management is not very costly or complicated if started early. But as a case of cancer, time worsens things. If reputation is your bread and butter, you need someone to keep it shinning like gold!
