Fortunately for price-conscious shoppers, it's possible to get a perfectly usable Laptop for less than one might think. These Budget choices run the gamut from sub-$400 Netbooks to more expensive systems that still represent an impressive value for their cost.
Gateway FX P-7805u
The good: Good Gaming scores, thanks to the Nvidia Geforce 9800 graphics; very inexpensive for a gaming laptop.
The bad: Lower Screen Resolution than its predecessor; lacks a few basic amenities, such as Bluetooth.
The bottom line: Our favorite budget gaming laptop returns as the Gateway P-7805u FX, and while it's still the best deal going in mobile gaming, we're bummed the screen resolution has been dumbed down to sub-HD levels.
The good: Good price for the Specs, for a Mac; sturdy construction; no graphics compromise.
The bad: Older battery doesn't last as long as the new Pros; still no SD card slot or ExpressCard; white MacBook design is getting a little old.
The bottom line: For $999, it's hard to beat this MacBook's nearly MacBook-Pro-level specs if you're in the market for a budget Apple laptop.
The good: Dual-core CPU for about the same price as a Netbook; 16:9 wide-screen display.
The bad: Very stripped-down design; missing some basic features.
The bottom line: The Dell Inspiron i1545-012B is one of the better deals you'll find for a mainstream laptop priced less than $500.
The good: Budget-friendly version of one of our favorite Netbooks.
The bad: Thicker and heavier than previous versions; included file-syncing software didn't impress us.
The bottom line: While the new, less expensive, HP Mini 110 doesn't stray far from the Mini 1000 mold, there are some subtle changes--not always for the best.
