3 Quick Ways to Set the Right Attitude for Effective Learning

Some people have problems trying anything that is new such as Learning a new language. Yet others can never get along with their colleagues despite changing companies many times. What could be the reason for this? Mostly it is due to their mindset or attitude.

So how can you create a right frame of mind that will ensure that you set the right attitude for learning? How can you make learning a pleasure instead of a painful experience? Here are some ideas.

Control your feelings and behavior: Most of the time, it is not the situations that bother or disturb us but it is the way we react to those situations that control the way we feel. If we pause and take a moment, we will realize that attitude stems out of our feelings and behavior. In any given instance, we have the option to view it positively or negatively. If we learn to control our feelings and the way we react to them, it will have a direct bearing on our attitude. A mind that is devoid of negative and unnecessary baggage of emotions is more receptive to acquiring knowledge.

Be open-minded about new ideas: If I consider a Mandatory Training Program a waste of time and I keep avoiding taking the course, I could be missing acquiring valuable knowledge. Besides, it could also demonstrate my arrogance – an arrogance which perhaps is due to my perception that I already know everything and there is nothing more to learn. However, if I change my perception by thinking, “Oh, the mandatory training program eats into my time but maybe there is something new for me to learn…”, I am being more open in my thoughts and ideas willing to absorb new ones as I go along. It only fosters learning.

Enjoy the process: Learning sometimes is externally imposed or mandatory. Sometimes, it could be to achieve an internally stimulated goal. Either way, we expect to attain a specific outcome. It is important to have a goal and work towards the goal. But it is equally important to enjoy the process as much as the final achievement of the goal. Learning can be effective and engaging when the learner is involved and immersed in the process and enjoys every moment of it. The outcome becomes a natural progression but not an obsession.

Attitude is something that matters most important in learning. Having the right attitude sets the foundation to effective learning. Learning not only becomes an enjoyable process but the knowledge is retained for long.
