Typical Ukrainian Developer in 2017 [Part 2]

Last week we talked about work preferences of Ukrainian developers in 2017, according to a survey held by dou.ua.
Today we’d like to find out educational background, personal qualities, achievements, and other preferences of most Ukrainian tech specialists.

89% of all respondents have a degree in higher education, while more than a half of all Ukrainian developers (57%) have graduated from a university with a Bachelor or Masters Degree in Computer Science, Programming, or some other technical fields of study. This fact confirms the thought that Ukrainian specialists are well-educated specialists that are eager to learn new things.

There is no doubt that English is important in the tech world these days. 75% of Ukrainian IT specialists know English at Intermediate or upper levels. Most Top Managers, Business Analysts, and Project Managers have an advanced level of English, while most Developers, QA Specialists, and System Administrators know English at an intermediate level. 8% of Ukrainian specialists have fluent English.

As in the previous survey, almost every third developer is single. And at the same time, 40% of all respondents are married.

The demographic situation hasn’t changed as well, comparing to the previous year. Most IT specialists are not planning to have kids soon, or at least 76% don’t have any kids. Only 5% of respondents under the age of 25 have a child, while 65% of respondents, that are over 30 years old, have a kid.

The number of kids hasn’t increased, while the number of pets has increased comparing to the previous year. 28% of developers have a cat and 11% of respondents have a dog. While 56% of all respondents don’t have any pets at all.

About a half of all respondents (46%) are renting an apartment or house. 27% of those who are renting a place for living, do not plan to buy their own apartment/house. While more than a half of Senior Developers have their own place for living.

Almost half of all developers (48%) are eco-friendly people, so they use public transport to get to the office. At the same time, a quarter of others (25%) use their own cars, mostly Top Managers, Project Managers and Business Analysts, Junior and Middle Developers often use a bike to get to work.

In Kyiv and other big Ukrainian cities, most developers spend 20-40 minutes to get to their workplace. In smaller cities, it usually takes less than 20 minutes.

This year, more and more developers follow healthy lifestyle, doing such activities as walking (58%), attending cinema, theatre, and museums (42%), and are keen on tourism and travelling (39%). Also, Ukrainian IT specialists like reading (48%).

Most of Ukrainian developers like sport activities. 29% regularly visit gym and swimming pool, while 45% go there from time to time.

Most Ukrainian developers are working with European and American companies, so usually their working day starts at 11am or even 1pm. So most of them are “night owls” (47%), and they sleep 7-8 hours a day (43%).

Ukrainian IT community keeps fighting against bad habits. All numbers have decreased by 6-12% comparing to the previous year. Still the biggest bad habit is “bad language” and drinking hard alcohol. But at the same time, more than a half of all developers (32%) believe that workaholism is their bad habit.

The answer to the question “Tea or coffee?” remained unchanged – it’s still coffee. And this year Ukrainian developers began to drink more water, which is definitely a good tendency.
