GMCH Performs the first PAIR to treat hydatid cyst

PAIR (puncture-aspiration-injection-reaspiration) procedure is a noninvasive treatment option to remove Hydatid cysts. This is a minimally invasive form of surgery for hydatid Cyst as these are usually treated with open surgery.

Hydatid cyst is a parasite disease which is mostly associated with liver. It is one of the oldest and most persistent public healthcare problems across the world. Udaipur has the highest prevalence of such cysts primarily due to issues like improper disposal of animal waste. It spread through eating food items which have somehow been infected by animal faeces,” said Dr. Gupta.

The PAIR procedure was performed on the patient as an ultra sound-guided percutaneous puncture of the cyst was done (as P stands for Puncture), aspiration of cystic fluid was made (as A stands for Aspiration), injection of scolicidal solution (I stands for Injection) and respiration of the solution (R stands for Re-aspiration) which helped in removal of complete hydatid cyst causing no recurrence,” said Dr. Barath. The procedure lasted only 10 minutes wherein comparison to an open surgery.

The patient Heerji Patel, 45 years old male, reported with symptoms of jaundice, fever, pain in stomach & liver. On consultation at a hospital in Ahmedabad, he was not relieved from the pain. To then he came at GMCH & consulted Gastrologist Dr. Pankaj Gupta. On investigations of CT Scan & Blood Test it confirmed the presence of hydatid cyst in liver for which he was treated with latest technique. The patient recovered well. The patient was treated free under the flagship scheme of Rajasthan Government’s Bhamashah Swasthya Bima Yojana (BSBY).
