Rajasthan govt reverses its own order, okays caste-based land allotment

JAIPUR: The Vasundhara Raje Government has decided to reinstate land allotments at concessional rates -made originally by the previous Congress government -to various castes and communities.

The decision to `reverse’ its opposition to the allotment has come close on the heels of giving the goahead to the luxury residential complex, Palacia, after cancelling it initially.

The present government had put 61 land allotments made by the previous government under scanner after coming to power in 2013.

These allotments, made in favour of different castes and communities, have now been given the green signal by the state cabinet in an attempt to shore up votes ahead of polls. The then Ashok Gehlot government had agreed to allot the land at concessional rates ahead of the 2013 assembly polls. But, when the Raje government came to power in December 2013, these allotments were first put under review and later cancelled after claiming that it was a `misuse of public land’.

While the Bjp Government has now decided to clear the allotments made for community purposes, it has not yet fixed the rates for the same. The former government had allotted the land at 5% of the price.

“The cabinet has decided to allot land to various castes and communities. For long, we have been receiving demands from these sections. The land will be allotted to sections such as Brahmins, Rajputs, Meghwal, Muslims, etc.,” urban develop ment and housing (UDH) minsiter Shrichand Kriplanai said.

“Out of the 61, the maximum number of reallotments (35) has been made in Kota district. Similarly, we will provide land to different organisations at six separate places in Jaipur,” UDH sources said.

Recently, the UDH department had shot off letters to all urban improvement trusts (UITs) and development authorities seeking records of land allotments cancelled earlier.

“Development authorities have already given possession of land at four places in Jaipur and three in Kota.Similarly, land has been given to beneficiaries in Bhilwara and Udaipur. These were earlier cancelled by the BJP government. Many organisations have even constructed buildings on the allotted land,” sources said.

But the BJP government is likely to revise the allotment rates. After coming to power, BJP had formulated a new policy to allot land to schools, universities, hospitals and other social institutions falling under development authorities, housing board, urban improvement trust jurisdictions at concessional rates.

“The rates for reallotments have not been decided yet,” added Kriplanai
